Future jobs

What is the outlook of future jobs in your district? You can anon answer poll but if you wouldn't mind sharing your district and your opinion on future jobs...

Re: Future jobs

Our district is small. there was a health care incentive last year, so everyone who is retiring retired last year.

our jobs seem secure (the district really doesn't want to excess anyone and we only excessed .5 last year), but for outsiders...not good. If anything did open up, we have leave replacements and TAs who have proven themselves and would be up for the spot.

Re: Future jobs

My district is not hiring. Some teachers with 7 years in the district may get excessed this year!

As for the overall outlook, it's not so hot. Something that I recently learned was that there's a law that protects excessed teachers. If a teacher is excessed and that position reopens within 7 years, the district must call back the excessed teacher first. This is where I see many difficulties for new teachers. Also, the number of experienced NYC teachers who have been excessed will flood the market, as well.

Like any market, it's a cycle. I'm sure it will get better with time.

OK so who said good? I'm coming to your districts Chat Icon

FM me if you'd rather do that please. I am ready to branch out since I've invested a great deal of time in districts where I likely have no future.

Re: Future jobs

I'm sure there are many districts with a large number of retirements coming up, incentives, etc. You're smart to try to get that info on here. My post was based on what I see going on in my district, which is kind of depressing for all of us...

I truly hope you are able to find something more permanent! By the way, what are you certified in? If I hear of anything, I'll let you know.

I am not on LI, but the job market by me does not look good. According to my supervisor, we are in better shape then most schools in my area, but I am sure there are going to be cuts. Last year, they cut/reduced 37 positions.

Re: Future jobs

I said good. My situation is different because I am at a private school way out east, and though two years ago it was a bit touch and go, we are growing. Next year we plan on hiring for at least two grades. When I say way out east, I mean about as far as you can get. So, while I live out here, for many the commute is not an option. I taught 8 years in MD before I moved here, and while I know they aren't hiring as much, they aren't letting people go, and will need to hire as people have children and the like. But MD seems a lot stricter about the number of kids in a classroom than NY does, they also have counties so it is much easier to apply for jobs.

we have people retiring and their jobs are being absorbed by the doomsday budgets. i think it's going to be a few years before they start adding positions back again, and there's always fear of layoffs.

Small district. Young staff. Not many retirees. Excessing could be a reality this year. At a minimum aides and TA will be decreased as my district consolidates kids in classes, while still meeting IEP mandates.

Me as well. I'm looking into different options. I had a great run in early childhood for the last five years. I can't financially do this anymore though. Chat Icon

Re: Future jobs

is there truth behind this?:

i heard that if i don't teach 3 years full time within 5 years, i have to retake my tests and such to renew my certification? so that obviously means everyday subbing doesn't count, only subbing in tenure track positions and leave placements.

I remember reading something on the TEACH website about extending Initial certification for now....I didn't look into it in depth, but I would check there.

ETS: Subbing counts!

This is what I am dealing with right now. My initial expires in 1 year. I will not have 540 days. 6 months prior to expiration you can apply for an extension and they can give you 2 additional years.

I don't know how I haven't made it, especially with two leaves that were 6 and 8 months Chat Icon I feel like I sub all the time and now I can't get a "real" job because I have to be available to sub! UGH! I am sick of not working and being poor. Chat Icon

When i go on TEACH it says I have to fill in the experience part... don't they have my info? I subbed for close to 200 days I believe, why is it not documented on the professional certification site? I stopped subbing this year but I still want those days to count. I'll probably have to get an extension... this stinks!! 540?? I won't even be close to that when mine will expire... I don't want to have to do everything all over again...

So was I. I have my Master's in early childhood and I can't find a full time job. Now i have to pay my master's back and I am jobless. I was subbing in nyc until I moved too far out on the island. I haven't found a job out here either. The DOE makes me feel like this Chat Icon because they make everything difficult. I am having trouble getting documentation of how many days I have subbed. and when I do get documentation it is wrong... I have subbed well over 200 days and subcentral only has 200 documented. But I want those extra 3-4 weeks counted that I worked and was paid for documented because I'll need every day I can if I want to keep my certification. That is... if I ever find any job ever again... Chat Icon I want to crawl into my bed and cry right now!! I was on the phone with the department of HR for over an HOUR ... 64 minutes and 48 seconds to be exact and I got nowhere.

Re: Future jobs

The whole situation just stinks! I had tenure in NYC and 5 years ago decided to look on the island for a job. I luckily ( so I thought ) found a leave replacement in a great district. I was there for 4 years - 4 full year leaves and because of lowered population and $$$ there was nothing for me. I then fell into a short-term leave for this year that has turned into a full leave. I totally lucked out with that one! But right now, I don't have a job for Sept and I am pregnant, due in Aug.... It just stinks that I have been teaching for 11 years and I don't have a stable job!!!!
Thanks for letting me vent and good luck to you all!

Re: Future jobs

I think a large part depends on what your certification is... im sure my district will be hiring in some certifications, but not in others...

I agree that it depends on what your certification is. It also depends on people retiring and if the district can afford to replace that teacher or is just doing without. For my school (HS in NYC) my dept hasn't hired in a few years.
