"Gaps" in a teaching resume?

I went out on maternity leave a year ago, and I will be home with my daughter until September. While I can go back to my school, I want to look for something closer to home. (I know the education job market sucks, but it's worth a shot, right?).

How do I write the dates on my resume? I don't want it to look like I picked up and left (or was asked to leave) before last Thanksgiving. Technically I'm still a DOE employee, but is it a bad idea to write 2004-present on my resume when I've been out for the past year?

Help?

How about if you used the end date of when you actually left prior to maternity leave and then let the maternity leave bit 'slip' in your cover letter. For example, you could end it with something like 'With my maternity leave now ending, I'm looking forward to finding new opportunities in the education field.' I'm sure you can be more articulate but you get the gist Chat Icon

I would write 2004-present because you are still a DOE employee. I am very hesitant to let people know you have kids during the interview process. Competition is so tough that it could be that one factor that goes against you.

This was my thinking, too. I didn't want a hiring principal to know that I was a parent, and I didn't want them to assume that if/when I get pregnant again, they'd have to replace me for another year.

Thanks ladies!

I would also leave to present on your resume. And when you do get a new job....please let me know where your old vacancy is and if you know anyone that would be willing to take my resume from youChat Icon

I would also put present on the resume.

But nothing says that you have to have the dates in a prominent spot on the resume. I have a gap and I put the dates after the "what I do/did" blurb.
