Garage / Yard sale tips please
I'm planning to have my first Yard sale!
As a seller, please share any tips to help make the sale more organized, less stressful - dare I say fun?
As a buyer, what would make you really want to shop my sale or run the other way?
Thanks!

Re: Garage / Yard sale tips please
We've had yard sales before and what we did was:
- put your nicest, most attractive stuff closer to the street so people are more likely to stop.
- keep rearranging things as you sell stuff so that it looks organized, neat, and still stocked with plenty of valuable/attractive items.
- put a price on EVERYTHING. People are less inclined to "make an offer" unless it's something they really want. Better for you to give them a starting point. But we always let everyone know we're negotiable.
- Start early. And whatever time you say your sale begins, expect a wave of people to show up 30 minutes prior to that looking for deals, so be ready.
- I've also heard the suggestion to keep a cooler of cold waters/sodas there for your kids (if you have kids) to sell, especially if it's a hot day. I've heard of kids making a killing running lemonade stands during yard sales. We've never done that so no personal experience.

signs, signs and more signs!!!!
post of FB Buy/ Sell groups when your sale is, also try and have plastic bags to put stuff in that people buy it makes it easier- and the people love them!
Have lots of change and be prepared to be aggravated- everyone wants a bargain and people get pushy

Re: Garage / Yard sale tips please
simple readable signs put up on main roads leading to your house - its no good putting up an 8.5 x 11 piece of paper on a telephone pole because no one driving by will be able to read it
be prepared for people looking for extreme bargains - like you've marked it for $7 and they offer you $1. Or some people will go thru clothing, pick up a whole bunch and shove it in your face asking 'how much', when you've clearly marked it as $1 per item. You'll be doing a lot of quick adding in your head, and as long as you have the goal of getting rid of stuff over making money.. you'll be fine
yes, have lots of plastic bags handy and keep things fairly organized/pleasing to look at.
no one wants to have to dig thru boxes to find stuff, you want everything to be easily seen
I've done a few, and it's exhausting, but always worth it!

Do you need to charge 5 cents per plastic bag if you are in Suffolk county?

Re: Garage / Yard sale tips please
that's cheap! in the state of CA, they're 10 cents.
have some kind of music playing. nothing too loud or crazy. this helps buffer when people are having a private conversation about your items and it doesn't make them feel like you're hovering and/or listening to everything.
i've had small bottles of water and mini cans of soda for sale... $0.25 each.
i also limit my sale time. it's a LOT of work, and i am not a person who will be out there until 4pm. i do 8am to noon.
yes, yes, yes, on the signs. big signs that someone can read while driving and they know what's happening: yard sale, date, and arrow... you don't have to give the full address, maybe just street name... and keep the signs at every corner; like bread crumbs. don't put too much info because you can't read that while driving.
if you don't have natural shade, create some with a canopy or umbrella
have lots of small bills and coins. on this same note... if you need to price things less than $1, price them in $0.25 increments. this way you only need quarters. don't make life harder by needing pennies, nickles, and times.
recruit all your helpers... spouse, kids. bribe them, if you have to.
be mentally prepared for people to want stuff for free.
