Gas heat

We just had an offer accepted this weekend on a house (last house fell through)

This house has gas heat. I know nothing about Gas, since I have always had oil.is it SUPER expensive? Can you get same kind of contracts that you can with oil?

Re: Gas heat

We have it and I think I pay way less than the people with oil - although I have heard that gas and oil prices will always reamin pretty even, as large factories usually have the ability to use either and they switch depending on which is cheaper.

What I like is: the cleanliness of it, it's ALWAYS there (never worry about running out), no service contract for the furnace (keyspan takes care of it, but your ductwork is not keyspan's so you may need HVAC people is anything goes wrong), since it's hot air, no pipes freezing (the ones to the radiator at least), cooking with gas.

What I don't like: the idea of gas and it's flammability - but honestly, if I ever move to a house with oil heat, I will convert in a second.

We have gas heat! I love it. We pay Keyspan on average about $200 a month in the winter, but we've had a pretty mild winter so far. In past winters, we've paid as much as $350/month. In the summer, the gas is only used for our hot water heater, so we pay like $35/month.

Re: Gas heat

Thanks everyone. It's gas/hot water? Must have been a conversion, because they do have an electric stove...I am so confused, LOL! It is 2 zones though, so at least I can control it, and the CAC is 3 zones...woohoo

You do NOT have to have a "cleaning" contract on a gas burner...there is no maintanace on the burner.

We have a conversion done almost 4 years ago and it was the BEST thing we did to our house! Gas burns so much cleaner than our old oil burner and we do not have to sorry about getting the tank filled up

good luck with the house!!

Same here. My Dh actually did the conversion. Love it!!! Although eventually I am switching my stove to gas because I like flame cooking better. Our fireplace and BBQ run off of our gas as well and it's fabulous!

We have gas heat, stove and BBQ too. Next year I'm aiming for the fireplaceChat Icon

We paid for the contract last year and it was a total waste. I know people who have had gas for 12 years and never had a contract.

Re: Gas heat

I pay less with gas than I did with oil. Mostly b/c my appliances work more efficiently on gas (the stove, the dishwasher, the W/D).
