I love the articles about Exxon and how they post record profits every quarter. their CEO just retired with a $150 Million retirement package
This, unfortunately, is Corporate America and extends past the utilities industry. Take a look at what the corp. executives get as year end bonuses at Merrill and Goldman. Plus, the price of oil is driven, in large part, by the commodities market...not executive pricing. The geopolitical unease in Iran and Nigeria has driven the commodities market in to a frenzy. In addition, refining is at almost 100% capacity and is still suffering from the Hurricane damage from last year limiting overall capability.
NYS does have some control with the price of gas in NY with it's gas tax which the NYS government has not addressed as of yet. The last time it was mentioned, I believe NYS has one of the highest, if not highest, gas tax.

I watched a CNN report (still on now) and they showed the price for regular in CA at $3.77 a gallon for regular!
the media does not help by creating a hype that forces this commodity to go through the roof.

couple that with the fact that China's economy is growing 6-7% a year- behind the US they are buying up a lot of oil- going around the world for it b/c they need it for their growing economy. In the past, this was never an issue.
we all have to be more aware of this- b/c as China and India industrializes, the competition for finite oil resources will get worse, therefore increasing prices more.
I think we all have to realize this- and do something about our own consumption- this might mean actually consuming less oil instead of buying that SUV and complaining about gas prices.

Re: Gas prices!
What I don't get is how prices can be completely different at different locations of the same company. There's two Exxons down the street from us; one if you're heading northbound and one if you're heading southbound. Literally less than 1/4 mile from eachother. The northbound one is almost 20 cents more a gallon than the southbound one (It was at $3.19 for regular yesterday)

I think these are franchises - like a McDonald's. They set their own prices with a limit. We have that here too with Mobile. One on Merrick Road and one on Sunrise highway are usually about 10 cents different.
We are using our bikes more to do local things and we are trying to use one car as opposed to both of them. DH will drop me at the station and I'll walk home.
