Gas Stations Going Out of Business
Does anyone else notice that there are a ton of gas stations in their neighborhood going out of business?
I also noticed that at a local Hess station you are only allowed $50 in regular.
Thoughts?

i have noticed this trend for a while especially where i live on the south shore.
All along sunrise highwya from merrick to massapequa, there are abandoned gas stations, also a whole bunch on merrick road as well.

Re: Gas Stations Going Out of Business
I read an article that the smaller gas stations are barely making any money. I didn't think that could possibly be true, but I guess all of the closings says that's accurate. One of my friends went to one of the statiosn that can only charge $3.99 and he was closing pumps because he was lsoing so much money. The gas station by us only allows $75 for regular. DH has to pump twice to fill his tank. It's annoying.

Usually the $50 and $75 restrictions are put in place by the credit cards. That gas station probably has an agreement with VISA and MC that allows him to only sell $50 worth of gas at a time. If you give the attendant $100 I am sure they will authotize $100 at the pump.
I used to have a gas station by me that had a $50 limit. That was annoying at $2.50 a gallon. Can only imagine how annoying that must be now.

I noticed it awhile ago too. A lot of places are changing over to auto repair/mechanics & getting rid of the gas.

Same, cause I work in the area but the ones who closed down have reopened.
reason, I know why- Taxes. There was two on Merrick rd and both were due to not paying taxes.
both have reopened.

Yes, I noticed that too in the last 2 months.
Some closed, reopened, closed, reopened and are now just auto repair.

Re: Gas Stations Going Out of Business
I read an article last week that station owners don't make any money on gas (or very little). the price is set by Exxon, Shell or whoever they lease the station from.
they sell gas in order to attract people to using their repair shops, lotto tickets, food, etc - and that is how they make their $$

I also think there was a recent change in laws that is requiring gas stations to change the type of underground tanks they use. It is a major expense to do. Some have closed, done it and reopened. Some are choosing just to be service stations.

Re: Gas Stations Going Out of Business
I know someone who owned a gas station. They closed. He is losing money on the gas. He doesn't own a store or a repair shop which is where they make most of their money. So he had to close.
I know the Getty by me has pumps that only go to 3.99 so the only sell regular.

Re: Gas Stations Going Out of Business
gas stations only make about $.12 per gallon- they make more $$$ on convenience stores and repair shops.

That's exactly how it is, unless they have an repair shop or convenience store attached, they aren't making enough to remain open. They make pennies per gallon on gas.

Re: Gas Stations Going Out of Business
The closest gas station to me, on Rt. 25A, has been closed for while while they dig huge holes and such. Looks like they are removing the old tanks... I wonder if timing was strategic on thier part.
