Gender Poll- Boys vs. Girls...
Hey guys! I'm still alive down here in VA.
Running quick poll based on last night's convo.
DH & I were having a discussion about the stuff boys get away with in their teens...well he said my 19 yr old BIL had wrappers( U know what kind) lying around in his room. He thought it was funny...well ok it wasn't so funny when I said when Marissa's his age then it's ok for her to have wrappers lying around in her room. He said NO that's different! How is that different....it's ok for guys to do it but not girls????
Opinions...

I voted "don't know". I honestly think it depends on that parents. I got away with WAYYYYYYY more than my DH did b/c he had really strict parents and I did not.

Re: Gender Poll- Boys vs. Girls...
No way. And I think a lot of it stems from rising societal pressure for young girls to grow up too quickly. I also think that boys get away with more in general b/c there are different expectations from boys in that they "mature less quickly."

Hola chica...I must answer this for ya...since We come from similar backgrounds and this has come up in my HH TOO!!
Being a 1st and a girl, Nothing compares to my younger brother and the things he got away with and still is! Our liveas are different!!!!
Sorry, it would be different! Like the 19yr old boy was looked like "champ" and the 19 yr old girl would be considered a "slut". Right?

Hey Sonia!
In my family, boys get way more freedom because they can't get pregnant.

oops, I voted wrong, I put "yes" but meant to put "no." Girls and boys definitely don't get treated the same way, not as a teenager, and not as children either. Or as adults for that matter.

Hey Sonia! I've been missing ya!!
To answer your question- it most cases- HECK NO!! Now I was raised in a family of girls- with very liberal parents. But still, I think no.
Actually there was the funniest line in the TV show October Road last week. When telling someone he had 2 sons the guy said "So now i only have 2 penises to worry about instead of thousands"

Hey mama!!! Nice to see you around!!
Even though my brother and I were both treated pretty equally - generally speaking I feel that NO teen girls and boys are treated very differently. Boys get away with alot more than girls do!

Re: Gender Poll- Boys vs. Girls...
It think there is a tendency to think that way because the repercussions of sex are far worst for a young girl than they are for a guy. Is it fair? NO. But that's the reality of life.

Re: Gender Poll- Boys vs. Girls...
There is definitely a double stadnard.
I think maybe girls can get away with some minor stuff, especially if theya re daddy's girls or something, but when it comes to sex, I think in general the girls are more protected.
I don't think the aprents are necessarily doing a disservice. The "real world" will see girls and boys who have sex in their teens differently too.

Re: Gender Poll- Boys vs. Girls...
I think there are many parents who do not treat their boys and girls equally. We do not have kids yet, but this is an area where DH and I really disagree and I am worried about it. He also has that "boys can't get pregnant" attitude
I told him that I REFUSE to treat my children differently just because of their sex. If I had twins - boy and girl, I would never say "boy, you can go to the party" and "girl, you cannot go to the party" - unless there were other reasons, such as if girl was doing poorly in school, or was in trouble for something else, etc. But never just because 1 is a boy and 1 is a girl!
There is a part of me that thinks if all our kids are the same sex, things may be easier!

Re: Gender Poll- Boys vs. Girls...
I think it depends on the issue. There are certain things I think boys get away with that girls wouldn't, and there are things girls get away with that guys wouldn't.

Sonia, where have you been?!
J/K I missed you!!!!
To answer your question, I don't think they are treated equally at all. As much as I like to think of myself as progressive and would hope to treat my children equally, regardless of gender, I know I would worry more about a daughter.

unless your son is arrested for having sex with an underage girl- it does happen- even if they are the same age

Re: Gender Poll- Boys vs. Girls...
My parents let me have all the freedom in the world and I did not end up PG. My dad did not have a clue I even existed untill I needed him to pay for college. No wonder I flunked out and had to go to Community College for a year to get reinstated.
I don't think gender has a thing to do with freedom, I think its the parents.
