GENE VARIANT IS ASSOCIATED WITH BOTH AUTISM AND GASTROINTESTINAL
GENE VARIANT IS ASSOCIATED WITH BOTH AUTISM AND GASTROINTESTINAL DYSFUNCTION
Autism is a disorder characterized, in part, by deficits in communication abilities. Gastrointestinal conditions are common among individuals with autism, and it may be difficult for some individuals to communicate that they are experiencing gastrointestinal discomfort. Some theories of autism speculate that gastrointestinal dysfunction may impact brain development, while other theories of autism suggest that the altered nervous system development may affect gastrointestinal function. In the study, "Distinct Genetic Risk Based on Association of MET in Families With Co-occurring Autism and Gastrointestinal Conditions," researchers demonstrate genetic risk may be playing a role in both the brain and the gut. The scientists found that a functional genetic variant in a gene called MET is more strongly associated with autism specifically in those families where an individual had co-occurring autism and a gastrointestinal condition. Independent studies have shown that the MET gene product, a receptor tyrosine kinase protein, functions in both brain development and gastrointestinal repair. These data suggest that altered MET expression may contribute to a syndrome that includes autism and co-occurring gastrointestinal dysfunction.

A HUGE huge HUGE number of individuals with autism have GI issues.
In fact, I'm not sure if people remember the secretin story from 10 years ago, but it was used for kids with autism to help with GI issues, and parents discovered it helped with some behaviors, causing a huge rush of secretin drips for all kids, unfortunately - but it started with treating GI issues.
That is why diet helps some kids, and my personal opinions on the mercury issue is not so much from the vaccinations themselves, but *MAYBE* from individuals with autism's abilities to process them correctly due to stomach issues.
Lots of studies with autism and the stomach - I'll definitely share them with you as they come in!!!

That's very interesting. Can I ask where you got that study from?

On my "on-going" research on the topic, I did read about this. This is why some of the diets "may" work in some kids. The alternative medicine of some supplementations of vitamins, specific food to avoid or to eat, make sure the right organisms are in the GI track, etc..

this makes a lot of sense..... MET is one of those super-common signal transduction proteins... it signals many things in many different cells... Specifically in development of the brain, it affects hepatocyte growth factor, a signaling molecule that mediates the development of cells responsible for depositing myelin (problems in myelin development is the one consistent thing that histologically identifies an autistic brain.... they have insufficient 'insulation' around their 'wiring')
MET is also involved in a lot of different tissues' development..... so a MET mutation affecting the digestive system is not surprising... it also is involved later in life with the development of various cancers....
problems with cellular signal transduction cascades can be really

Re: GENE VARIANT IS ASSOCIATED WITH BOTH AUTISM AND GASTROINTESTINAL
sorry! I've been writing and editing manuscripts all day... it's hard to flip the gibberish off after a while
abridged version: it makes sense.... MET does a lot of stuff.... it could affect virtually anything in the body... either during development, or later in life (as cancer)
