Generic or Name Brand Prenatals?

Since TTC my DH was able to get my RX for free.

But now with his new job, we are back to paying for RXs. I got my first one filled and it was $17 for name brand.

If it was generic it would be $10. I know not a big difference, but over time it'll add up.

I wondered is there a difference, should I ask my OB for a generic brand?

Re: Generic or Name Brand Prenatals?

You can get the generic or just buy OTC prenatal vitamins and a bottle of folic acid. Same thing but much cheaper. I used the CVS ones for my pregnancy and they didn't make me as sick. My OB said it was the same (only difference was the folic acid conent, which is why I had to buy a separate bottle of folic acid)

I didn't realize there was a difference. How much extra folic acid do you take?

If I remember correctly, it has to be at least 400m? It's been a while since I had to take them. Chat Icon

I have been taking Flintstones Complete chewables and then a 400 mcg tablet of Folic Acid. All the other prenatals I tried were making me sick.

Re: Generic or Name Brand Prenatals?

Wow, I'm paying $40 a month for my prenatals! $17 seems like a bargain to me!

However before TTC and while TTC I was using CVS brand prenatals and my doctor told me those were fine to take.

I took the store brand with with DS and now with this pregnancy. My doc said that if I can tolerate them and don't feel sick then - they are fine.

At 33 weeks I'm a little anemic but I was with DS as well so I'll also take an iron suppliment as well.

I was thinking the same thing. $17/mo is one thing but anything more than $30 IMO is too much a month
