Re: Germany
Is there a particular area you'll be in? Since you're there during Oktoberfest, are you planning on staying in Munich? Will you have a rental car, or are you willing to travel by train, and if so, how far? I lived in Germany for a little while, so I can probably recommend some places for you, but if you narrow it down a bit it'll help

Re: Germany
We are planning to stay in Munich for a couple of days but I think I would like to see more than Munich.

Re: Germany
While you're in Bavaria, you should definitely see King Ludwig's Neuschwanstein castle (they do tours in English), and I second the Black Forest. Dachau isn't too far away if you want to visit there.
I lived in Ulm while I was in Germany, and that's a nice city on the Danube River, about 2 hours from Munich. There's a historic section of town where you can walk along the old city wall, and lots of shopping in the modern part of town. The cathedral there has the tallest steeple in the world, and you can buy a ticket and climb the stairs to the top.
A little further in the direction of Frankfurt (northwest) is a town called Rothenburg, and it's still got all the medieval walls, buildings, etc, they have people dressed in the old garb play instruments on the streets, it's cute. And the Wurzburg residence isn't too far from there - it's a beautiful, ornate palace with gardens to walk through... there are actually a bunch of these all over Germany, so if you're not headed up that way, I'm sure you can probably find some other palace to visit!
If you go to Berlin, IMO it's the most like a western city. Very busy and cosmopolitan, but some great history with the wall, etc. I recommend the Checkpoint Charlie museum, and you'd have to see the Brandenburg gate and all the famous stuff, of course.
That's all I can think of for that area off the top of my head...

Re: Germany
My husband is working there now and I was there in Feb to visit-I flew into Frankfurt and we traveled in Dusseldorf and Cologne.
The other days we visited other countries...
if you are going to either of those places I can tell you what we did

Re: Germany
I lived in Germany (near Stuttgart, don't bother) for a year so hopefully I can help. I found Oktoberfest very touristy and if you don't have a spot reserved at least a few months prior it might be difficult to get a seat at a beer garden. Still Munich has a lot to offer.
An above poster suggested Ulm, that is really nice. I really liked Garmisch. They have good skiing (not sure if they will have skiing then), but I did enjoy the 1936 Olympic area if you are into history. Nuremberg is supposed to be very historical with all the Nazi history and stuff. I plan to go there in 2009.
I love Berlin and went there often. The history, the culture, everything about this city is amazing! I suggest going there.
The Black Forest is nice- Freiberg, Heidelberg, Titisee are all nice. Also have you thought about going to Austria? Salzberg is beautiful.
FM me if you need help.

Re: Germany
In addition to PP's, eastern Germany has some beautiful spots as well. My sister lives in Leipzig... a very laid back , but interesting city. there is an opera house, the church where Bach was an organist as well as a lot of museums, etc. Dresden is also beautiful little town. also, if you get that far east, you might even want to try Prague too!
