Getting a new home...then a dog?
Who has done this or plans on doing this? I'm more excited to get a dog than buy a house! hehe!
I mentioned in another thread that when we get a home...I plan on taking a trip to rescue a Doberman Pinscher.
I love them. My dog, Zombie (ok ok..I named her when I was 17 haha), died at 14 years old last year. I loved her so much!
pics of her below 2 months before she passed...she made it to my wedding!

Re: Getting a new home...then a dog?
ME!!!!!
We are very eager to get a home but I cannot wait for the dog and the house, unfortunately, is a pre-requisite because we want a bigger dog.
I've always had a dog growing up and due to college then apartment living, have been living w/o one for the last 12 years!
I cannot wait!
PS: Your dog was such a cutie. RIP Zombie

Re: Getting a new home...then a dog?
We got the dog while we were in contract for house. It worked out fine really! We love our little Daisy Mae. Actually it might work out wonderful. After buying the house we were so broke that we were home a lot for the dog!!

Re: Getting a new home...then a dog?
I lasted about 2 weeks without a dog- I had lived with my parents before hand and there dog. One word of warning- I got a puppy so as I'm trying to paint my new house there she was walking through paint trays, stealing spackle tape etc

Re: Getting a new home...then a dog?
We did!! Kevin and DD always wanted to get a dog but didn't think it would be fair to do while we were still in our apartment so we wanted to wait until we got a house/backyard. We adopted Kasey about a month after moving in.

Re: Getting a new home...then a dog?
We bought our house in July 2004 and came home with our dog on January 2005. I love her very much she's part of our family but if I could do it all over again I don't know if I would do it the same She's a golden and I have to tell you I didn't realize how much work it is to take care of a dog (all that hair to clean up, walking her, and then tryiing to find a babysitter for her when we go away etc) and she's a big dog and we have a small house so I acutally feel a little bad for her.

Re: Getting a new home...then a dog?
DH always promised me a dog once we got a house and when we finally went into contract, he got me a dog for my b-day the next week...It has worked out perfect for us because I wanted her to be housebroken by the time we moved into our new house in 2 weeks and she is!

Re: Getting a new home...then a dog?
We're waiting till the end of the summer. We need to make sure the house & yard are dog ready and that includes putting up a proper 6 foot fence. Not to mention we want to vacation this summer and would want to hold off adopting tell after we come back.
Can't wait though till that day comes!

Re: Getting a new home...then a dog?
are you kidding?!!! if you are a dog lover---GO FOR IT! we did..we actually bought a real fixer upper house in july..at first i wanted to wait until everything was done. but we ended up getting a boxer at the end of august ..i was so happy that i did..it was crazy at first training her with so much work going on..but well worth it.
i know now if i waited..i never would have gotten a dog..because you are NEVER done with your house..EVER so i say def go for it! good luck .and dont forget to show pics when you get him/her..

Re: Getting a new home...then a dog?
We moved in on Oct 31 and had our puppy on Nov 14!! Then we got #2 a year and a half later. They will be rough on the house, our hardwood floors have taken a beating and there is always hair everywhere! But I wouldn't change it for the world, my dogs give me more happiness then pretty wood floors would

Re: Getting a new home...then a dog?
We went to contract on our house and contacted the Weimaraner Rescue a few days later...we got an e-mail the next day that they had a female puppy that needed a home right away. We took her into our 1 bedroom apartment while we waited to close on the house and are living happily ever after with our Misty since.
BTW, I had a dobie with my ex-husband and they are just the sweetest dogs. Also, the type of dog you have should have no affect on your homeowners insurance. If you do have a problem, find a different insurance company.

Re: Getting a new home...then a dog?
Home then dog.
Just easier if you have renovations to do, and just one thing at a time. This is how we did it anyway.
Nice pics, cute doggy, pretty bride!

We did it! We got the house in July, the dog the next April, and then another doggie in September. Good luck to you with your new home!
