I don't want to be a buzz kill here, but you need to be sure beyond a shadow of a doubt that you are ready for a puppy. They are ALOT of work, similar to that of having a child and if you're not ready I would say HOLD OFF on getting a pup.
I've known too many people who started off wanting that cute little pup and then once the work aspect really kicks in and the cuteness wares off, they're dropping their dog off at the shelter because they "couldn't handle" the dog.
Just be sure you really want this puppy and if you know deep down in your heart that you are, you'll be fine!!!

I would never ever drop my dog off at a shelter. I'm ready for a dog, I just get nervous about everything. My husband is 100% ready and is a very laid back person. Plus, he has own a dog before and knows how much work they are. I just have fear of the unknown.

Re: Getting a puppy and I'm scared!!!
I still get nervous and excited when I get a new pet -- and I've never given up one of my animals. Sometimes, I think being nervous is a sign that you're seriously considering the commitment. I think a lot of the people who bring pets back to the shelter were blinded by the thought of a cute little puppy -- not worried about being a good home for the animal. Puppies are a big commitment, and I don't think it's necessarily a bad sign that someone is a bit anxious about it.
What kind of puppy are you getting? Do you have a vet and training class lined up? I know that when I'm really prepared, I feel less anxious about things! A good vet and trainer can help you get through those formative years! My cousin got a great puppy book when she got her dog a couple of years ago. She said it was really helpful. I'll see if I can get the name of the book from her...
Good luck! It's a big commitment for sure, but it can be really rewarding!

Re: Getting a puppy and I'm scared!!!
I know exactly how you feel. We brought Bailey home a week ago and the day we made the "final" decision I went into the bathroom when my husband was taking a shower and pretended to throw up. We still have moments of - we don't know what we're doing.
It really helps that your husband has had a dog - neither my husband or I ever had anything other than fish, so we're nervous parents. It is a lot of work - I don't think anyone can ever explain how much work, but I also think the fact that you are both excited and scared means you will be responsible puppy parents.
Good luck and best wishes!
ps. though we're sometimes overwhelmed... Bailey is the best thing that happened to us!

Re: Getting a puppy and I'm scared!!!
It is very normal to be scared, but that does not mean you are not ready. It is scary because you have to change your life style, routine and it is like having a child to some degree.
I just got my first puppy in Dec and I will admit, it was rough at first with training, etc.. but it is night and day now from where we were 3-months ago. It is still a work in progress, but you will see the difference within a few days even and go from there. Don't give up and believe me it is such a joy and there really is nothing like having that un-conditional love every time you see them
If you hve any questions, just ask away most of us have been there!

Re: Getting a puppy and I'm scared!!!
Thanks everyone!! I'm still nervous, but what can I do. I have a few more Weeks to wait. I have a vet, and I actually know someone who trains dogs. My DH said he is going to do a lot of the training though. The breed I'm getting is very smart and you can train them very easily. Or so I hope!!

We are getting it from a breeder. They are not old enough to be picked up yet.

Re: Getting a puppy and I'm scared!!!
Good Luck! I'm sure it will be fine. If your husbands had a dog before and starts training right away, you'll be fine. What breed of dog are you getting ?
I can't offer much advise, I've always gotten adult dogs because I don't know if I can handle a puppy. So I understand how you are feeling. But they are soo cute !

We are getting it from a breeder. They are not old enough to be picked up yet. Ask the breeder how long they are available for advice. Many reputable breeders will offer advice for the life of the dog. They can help you with decisions like training, feeding, grooming and even how to find the right vet. They also can help you with the proper toys and exercise, etc.
What kind of dog?

This is completely understandable. Getting a dog is a lot of work, but in return you get the most UNCONDITIONAL LOVE you could ever want!
Try not to be nervous and remember, you can always call the breeder if you have a question and here!
Good luck and enjoy your new puppy!!

Re: Getting a puppy and I'm scared!!!
My DH was soooooo nervous when we got our kitten last year. It was so funny, I was just like your DH, super excited and he was a mess. He wanted her and was so glad we got her, but it was our first pet that we were fully responsible for and I think that made him anxious.
Once she was home with us he feel in love with her and she's our little princess.
Maybe it's just the initial anxiety of all the change!
Post pics when you pick the puppy up!!

Re: Getting a puppy and I'm scared!!!
The night before we got Denver, I started getting major anxiety. DH and I had never had a dog and I was so nervous about training him and if he would love us. I forgot all of that the second he came home, and neither of us have ever had a second of doubt. It is a huge committment

ITA!!
I was a first time dog owner too and was VERY nervous but that does not mean at all that you are not ready for a dog - it just means that you are worried and want to make sure that you'll be good at it -- I think it is similar to what it is like to be a parent for the first time.
