Getting copies of deleted received text messages?
My son received some disturbing texts from another student at school. He was upset by them and deleted them.
I called Verizon and they told me that I wouldn't be able to get a copy of the texts. However, I just met with the school principal and be said that I probably could.
Has anyone done this before and had any luck? Should I call Verizon back and ask for a manager or something, or is it totally not possible.
TIA

I think you need a court order- not sure though.

Re: Getting copies of deleted received text messages?
what kind of phone does he have? is it one that he backups to a computer? if so, there is usually a file within that that'll have all the texts.

I don't think it does. He's only 11 -- he just has a basic phone, not a smartphone or anything.

right youd have to subpoena the phone records... but if the phone company said no, why do you think they would still be able to?

Then Verizon is the only one that can get that for you.... you can try and strong arm them into getting it for you but usually without a court order, they don't have to..

As others already said I think you need a court order.
But another route you might be able to take is from the reverse...Could you possibly speak to the parent of the kid who sent your son these messages?
Provided it's another child sending these menacing texts
ETA: If your son is being bothered by someone maybe you could address it with the parent's?

I'm sorry if the issue is that your son is being bullied. So sad what kids (and adults ) do to one another. Anyway, if you cant get a hold of them than lodging a complaint w/the school is a good start. Also, this kid will prob do it again...unless of course his parents are responsible adults and get involved. Just be sure to tell your son not to delete any more texts.

Cell phone companies will not give you text logs unless you have a court order. There is no way to "strong arm" them as they have policies in place that they do not give them to customers.

I really dislike this entitled attitude that if you strong arm or complain or btch and moan long enough you will get what you want. Sometimes, the answer is just simply NO. I believe Jerseypanda works for Verizon, so she probably knows a little more about this than you.
To the OP, I am so sorry you are dealing with this but I also know that you would need a court order to get copies of the texts. I would definitely eliminate the texting capabilities for your son so he can't be bullied that way. And definitely speak w/the parents to put an end to this

It is actually a part of the industry that wireless companies are not allowed to give text logs to the customers. If you are able to find the "right person" just know that they are risking their job to do it because it goes against policy that they have to acknowledge on a yearly basis.

unfortunately, that's just how life is.. it's not entitlement or an attitude in any way.. I don't know nor care who works where.. just stating what I do know from experience and from others who have gotten the info without a court order...

Right. This has been my experience with work. Even with an authorization, the cell companies will not release without a court order.

WOW!!!! Ummm...ok, I am NOT A PARENT but IMPO, I would talk to the school psychologist about this and let them handle it. Just my opinion and maybe I'm wrong but I def do not think you should call his parents. If he is calling your son this much than he is prob talking to him or attempting to at school. Good Luck!

I do believe you need a court order, BUT maybe if you call verizon back and explain to them the severity of it, you may get a nice understanding person.

But that's the thing... it's not about finding a nice understanding person. It's against policy. And employees can get in trouble for doing it. Unfortunately there are plenty of understanding people out there, but if it means I'm putting my job at risk, I can appreciate the situation but I'm still not going to do it.

Which seems silly. It's your account, your texts, not sure why they just wouldn't let you have a copy of them. In fact, they should just have them available online. Actually I think Sprint may do that.

WOW WOW WOW! that's INSANE!! Something DEF needs to be done about this!! I think you need to talk to the teacher and the counselor at school. If this was my kid i would want to know as a parent... so i would want to be told by the other parent in a non-attack sort of way. But not all parents might be that way. I'd def start out with the school authorities and see what they suggest... the might know this boys family a little better and have insight on if and how you should approach the boys parents. However, as an end result... the boys parents NEED to know about this (more the harassing part... not so much the gay part... but in this case they seem to go hand in hand).
This boy def has some issues... and I feel like if everything goes untreated this situation could very well escalate. it's VERY odd behavior for a 10/11 year old. VERY odd. I'm so sorry you and your son are dealing with this.

Re: Getting copies of deleted received text messages?
Oh and as far as an answer to your message...
I was told I needed a police report for phone records. Not a court order. This was years ago so I'm not sure if things changed... but maybe call back verizon and talk about getting a police report. then just go file a report with the police station... which filing a report on this harassment isn't a bad thing anyway... it's good to have the police record of what's going on.
ETA: go through your caller id... write down the dates, times and phone numbers of the calls. Even make notation of the blocked numbered calls.
Then try to do the same with your son's cell phone...
this way when you go to the police you somewhat have records of what's going on.
And even if he is unsupervised.. I don't think his parents know at all what he's doing.

Re: Getting copies of deleted received text messages?
Thank you everyone.
Since the final incident (the text) things have finally settled down. I blocked the numbers on my son's cell phone that the kid calls from.
He did attempt to call our house the following day several times. We weren't home for the first 2 calls but on his 3rd try we were. My husband told him nicely that he is not allowed to call our home anymore and that my son does not wish to speak with him. He told him if he calls again we are calling his parents. So far so good.
Today I spoke with the principal of the MS my son is starting in Sept. He said I did the right thing by coming to him and if the boy tries to contact my son again he wants us to give him a call and he will take care of dealing with the parents. They will make sure that the boys are not in any of the same classes in Sept. He had asked me if I saved the texts, but my son erased them right away because he was upset by them and didn't want to look at them. I told him if he happens to get any texts now from a number he doesn't know he needs to tell me and I'll look at it.
I'm praying by Sept. this whole thing will blow over.

Actually, I can tell you for a fact that Sprint does not give you access to your text message logs online. You need a court order.
