Getting quotes for work in the home...
is insane.
We are having our kitchen tiled (as I posted about)
One guy quoted us $1300 and wanted to charge us $400 extra for "diamond style".
The next guy $600, any style we want.
Just insane! I always wonder how these people who quote double stay in business!

Re: Getting quotes for work in the home...
We're setting up appointments to have people come in and give us quotes for various stuff. Can't wait to see what happens!
Maybe the double-quoters hope that they're the only person you call in?! lol

Re: Getting quotes for work in the home...
There could be several reasons for the difference in price. One could have full liability insurance and be a licensed contractor while the other may not have insurance, or be licensed, or maybe both. There could also be a difference in the quality of materials they are using in the sub-flooring. The less expensive quote could be cutting corners. Charging more for diamond pattern sounds a bit much, but it probably takes more time and cutting, though our contractor didn't charge extra for that, he just asked me which I wanted. It does take more tile to do a diamond pattern because of the extra cuts. One may have more experience too, and places a value on that. Our contractor was meticulous about not only getting it right, but making sure everything was centered, level, etc. It's a subtle difference, but the diamond floor pattern is centered in the space, he started in the middle and worked out to the edge rather that starting at an edge and working across. The cheaper guys could be new and be low-balling the price to get experience.

I agree. Get a few more quotes; especially because there is a huge difference in price.

Re: Getting quotes for work in the home...
I'd actually be more leary of the cheaper price unless I knew several people who used them and had rave reviews. I'd continue getting estimates and as the PP said, ask for their license number and their liability insurance info (which I think should be in your contract from what I remember with our bathroom). We went with a cheaper company to redo our bathroom, not only were we not happy in the end, they went out of business!

Re: Getting quotes for work in the home...
have you thought about doing it yourself. Laying tile is not that hard and since you have a small area it might be worth saving the money.....a contractor will charge more for smaller jobs and all you have to do is rent a wet saw from home depot.
