Getting very fed up!
I teach self-contained 7th and 8th grade classes at a L.I public school. A majority of my students classified as L.D. with test scores in the 1st and 2nd percentiles. About 4 months ago, a student moved here from Florida. He was placed in all inclusion classes.
After about 2 weeks they moved him to self-contained (so he is in one of my classes) due to his bad behavior. His test scores are significantly higher than my students (some of them in the 80th percentile!). So first off, I'm upset because the program I teach has become a dumping ground for special education. This kid was acting up in inclusion so instead of creating a behavior plan they put him in an easier class- a class too easy for him.
For the first two weeks he either slept or was a distraction for the entire class. After being in my class for about 3 weeks, he attacked the aide in the room- grabbed her wrist and wouldn't let her go. She's still in splint and may need surgery. He was suspended for 5 days. Came back, big behavior problem.
In another class he collected rocks during a fire drill and upon returning to class started throwing them. He was NOT suspended at all.
We just found out this week, he is suspended for 5 days for sexually assaulting another student on the school bus.
This will be his second superintendent's hearing.
I'm just fed up because he doesnt belong in this program. His behavior is horrendous. I hope everyday he just sleeps (which on some days he does). He's a danger to the kids and teachers. And they just keep letting him back in! he needs an out of district placement. He does things like try to play tag in the middle of class and antagonizes the other children.
I can't even say anything because I dont have tenure and dont want to open my mouth.
It's just so frustrating and dangerous!

Re: Getting very fed up!
I hear you. It's so difficult when the school won't do anything to fix the problem so just leave it for you the teacher to deal with. I have something similar, a kid in my class (high school) whose behavior is so unpredictable and violent, I never know what he's going to do. I keep telling guidance, admin, etc. that he needs to be removed before he hurts someone (not to mention I get no teaching done with him in the room)... however, he's there every single day even though it's the wrong environment for him & he ruins it for the rest of the class (it's not a special ed class either). I don't blame you for being fed up. I know the anxiety you feel every day, not knowing what's going to happen. Just try to hang on, the school year is almost over. Hopefully he'll sleep most days & not bother anyone. Good luck!
