GHI & NYC DOE Hospital bill--update
I just got a bill from the doctor in the hospital NICU for 7,700 dollars for my baby's NICU stay. It says she was seen by an out of network provider, not like I had a choice. GHI sent me a check for 3,000 dollars saying that's all they will cover... Meaning we would have to foot the bill for the balance... Since they approved my hospital stay, I never knew this was possible. I didn't expect DD to be in the NICU( she's fine ) and the last thing I thought to ask was if the NICU doc took my insurance.... Has anyone dealt with this?
Update---- I sent the dr. the check and I got an explanation of benefits letter today and it says we just owe $300 for the hospital stay for the baby.... Phew!

i think you just send them that check and it is written off. We got bills for over 500,000 and only have to pay the deductible.

I have a similar problem. My daughter went in for ear tubes at st charles. We have GHI. This was planned etc. I get a huge bill and they tell me well the anesthesiologist (sp?) they used was out of network. WTF. I just dont get it. We planned this, got preapproval. Were not rich.

I also got a bill from my daughter's NICU doctor. I mailed them the check I got and never heard from them again.

My son was in the NICU....nothing serious thank goodness...and we didnt have to pay for anything!

Same thing happened to me. I was questioning it and they said OON providers. But, I didn't have a choice. I asked, in a nasty way , if I should be asking if each provider was participating or not.....
They were not impressed with my sarcasm.
Anyway, yeah.. you have to foot what the rest of the bill is. You can call the doctors and try to negotiate it down more. It couldn't hurt. At the very least you may get a payment plan. I have huge bills from my stay in May.
