GHI Question for the NYC Teachers

My mom is retired from the NYC Board of Ed. She turns 65 this summer and will be eligible for Medicaire.

Is it true that she has lifetime coverage from GHI and does not need Medicaire, or does should she still get Medicaire coverage? Thanks!

Re: GHI Question for the NYC Teachers

she needs to look at her teacher's contract, or the contract that was in effect when she retired. if she's already retired and has had GHI coverage, i don't see why that would not continue. typically, people that have insurance when they are retired still have to have Medicare, but the GHI will pick up anything that Medicare does not cover. also GHI does not cover Rx so she needs to look into what her teacher's coverage takes care of there, but i am assuming she has that.

Re: GHI Question for the NYC Teachers

My mom wasn't a NYC teacher, but she did work for a CUNY college. She has GHI and when she retired, she was able to keep her benefits. She's not 65 yet. My father is covered under her insurance and also has Medicare. Definately have her check out her contract or call her Union.

She has it for life but has to pay into while retired. I would have her call to verify.

She has it for life so long as we still have it in our contract. All that I have heard depends on our contracts that we make....whenever we actually have a current one!Chat Icon

Re: GHI Question for the NYC Teachers

she should still have GHI coverage for life.

I am not sure about getting medicare on top of it - I would think she should, she paid into it all these years, the more coverage the better!
