Gift for a Bar Mitzvah
What is the going rate for a bar Mitzvah gift? It is for my nephew. We will be going with a family of 4. My DH is VERY CHEAP and doesnt realize that we have to give a generous gift. Thank you

Re: Gift for a Bar Mitzvah
Great question ... I'm going to 2 this weekend
But our gifts would just be from me & DH.
One is my cousin's son ... the other is my Dad's cousin's son. We're not particularly close to either child.

Re: Gift for a Bar Mitzvah
I would give $500 for your nephew. I would ask your parents what they think but I would treat it similar to a wedding gift for a nephew.
Preshusmurf - I think it would depend upon your relationship with the child becoming a bar or bat mitzvah. If you are not related - I would think $200 from you and your DH is a fine gift. If you are related it could be more. Of course, if it is a neice or nephew then the same $500 would apply.

That is exactly what I'd do. I think I gave my nephew $500 3 years ago and we give $200 for a child we know relatively well or $360 for a child we know REALLY well.
Many give multiples of 18 as the number 18 is a good luck number in Judaism.

I think I might be giving a savings bond. Is that okay?

Re: Gift for a Bar Mitzvah
I agree many do give money and in multiples of 18 that number is lucky and it is also symbolic of giving chai or life.
