Girls that were on/are on metformin
I spoke to my RE today at my last appointment. I asked him how long I should be on the metformin for my IR. He said definitely through the first trimester, and that I should speak to my OB about how much longer after that. According to him, he strongly suggests I stay on it through the entire pregnancy. What are the risks to the baby? Does anyone have any information? I will definitely discuss it when I meet with my OB next week!

Re: Girls that were on/are on metformin
My RE wanted me to go off at 8 weeks. I didn't feel comfortable doing that, so I talked to my OB who said I could stay on it. I went off at 16.5 weeks. I am not insulin resistant, I was on it to induce ovulation (which didn't work anyway). I think that together with my OB I made the right decision. I had a LOT of stomach issues with the met, and everything has gone away since going off it.

What made you decide to stop it at 16.5 weeks?? Any specific reason?

I needed a refill, so my OB said just to finish up what I had and then to stop. I weaned off it - I was taking 2 pills a day, so I went to 1 pill until I ran out, which was 16.5 weeks. So there was no medical reason! I was safely into the second trimester, and although my oB did say there was controversy over met and pregnancy that since I was not insulin resistant, it was a good idea to go off it. Much of the reasearch I had done myself recommended staying on though the 1st trimester which is why I didn't feel comfortable stopping at 8 weeks.

I was done at 11-13 weeks. I think it also depends on your situation.

Re: Girls that were on/are on metformin
I'm so conflicted - I have no idea what to do! I guess I'll have to discuss it with my OB in depth...

Re: Girls that were on/are on metformin
I am treated by my ob and high risk dr's throghout the entire pregnancy. they both told me that i must stop the met at the end of 1st trimester. apparently there are risks involved with taking met the entire pregnancy or even into the 2nd/3rd trimester. i was very scared to come off as i thught it would be best to stay on it, but they both said there are riskis involved w/ the development of the baby and that hbp/preclampsia can be an issue fr the mom. once i heard all that i just said ok and followed drs orders. i am now 30 wks pregnant and doing great!!!!

Re: Girls that were on/are on metformin
I was with a high risk group at Columbia Presbyterian and they kept me on it thru the 2nd tri - but at the time it was based on their current studies - another HR dr I saw at Cornell also told me to stay on it thru 2nd trimester - when I started my pregnancy most of the LI drs told me they would be taking me off after 1st trimester so I think it depends on your Dr.

Re: Girls that were on/are on metformin
If it depends on YOUR individual doctor, how can you REALLY know if you're doing the right thing?!?
