Re: Girls with twins or pregnant...

Thanks guys! I am the first one in my family to have twins, I come from a big family and was okay with the idea of one at a time but this is still crazy for me. I guess you guys have all adjusted, is it really hard all the time or sometimes (be honest Chat Icon )?

I agree with momofabbyemily... the shock really never subsides, but it does become reality! It's been such a blessing, yes, it's a lot of work, but it is WELL WORTH IT! You have a network of support hereChat Icon Welcome to twin-mommy-hood.

GREAT book to read during pregnancy....

that book is great. It will give you an idea of what is to come. Being a mom of twins is great, you get to experience everything twice, and almost at the same time. It is a lot of work and time, my advice--just be patient with everything.

Congratulations!!! My girls are 8 weeks, and sometimes I still can't believe that there are
2 of them. Enjoy your pregnancy! It truly is amazing.

I got the book, When your expecting twins...
by Barbara Luke. She gives great advice in helping expectant women carrying twins full term.

Congratulations!

I agree with all the other girls, the shock truly has never worn off. Dont get too stressed out about it, it is difficult the first 6 weeks but then it really does get easier. My advice would be just prepare as much as you can for them as early as you can, because you never know if you are going to go full term or be put on bedrest. And I also recommend that ready or not here we come book. I'm re-reading it now in my spare time Chat Icon

I'm still in shock and mine are almost 16 months! Chat Icon
Seriously though, enjoy your pregnancy - take it easy when you can - it'll get very "uncomfortable" toward the end - but the reward is far greater. Its hard at times - but definetly not all the time. Try to have some help available when you first bring them home so you can get yourself into a routine. Chat Icon

Re: Girls with twins or pregnant...

Congrats!!!

Yes, it is often surreal that there are two in there.

I'm 30 weeks along but some things that I have found helpful so far...

Don't compare your pregnancy to others. Multiples can be different. You will get bigger, faster and the symptoms most pregnant women experience in the last month, you are more likely to experience earlier. Drink lots and lots of water. Always carry healthy snacks with you and elevate your feet as much as possible, the edema can get really bad.

Be prepared earlier than most. It's not too early to start thinking about everything, as multiples tend to come earlier. I registered earlier (done by week 20), got the cribs/furniture earlier, and had my shower at week 30. This also goes for daycare. It's more difficult to find a twin placement due to infant/adult ratios in most centers.

Talk to your doctor/employer about the reality of a multiple pregnancy. We cannot work up until our due date. My boss honestly thought I could, he thought it was the same as most singleton pregnancies. My doc was very happy that I lasted until week 30 teaching high school but there was no way he was allowing me to continue passed that point.

Plan for help after the birth. How much time will your DH's job give him? Do you have family to help out? Can you afford a nurse? Do you have someone who can run errands for you?

It may seem like a lot of work but they are so worth it.Chat Icon

Good luck.

Re: Girls with twins or pregnant...

I don't have twins but my best friend does. Here is what I have learned from her and my "neices"

Don't compare their development to other kids if they are born early. They'll get there.

Look into bottle proppers so they can start to feed themselves early on. This takes a lot of time

Know the signs of labor-she went into labor at 29 weeks and her girls were in the NICU. Her Dr had never discussed with her what the signs were. Her girls are fine now.
if you have anything else going on (gestational diabetes, high blood pressure, etc.) you should be seeing a high risk doc along with your OB

Good luck and just remember they are great once they are here! You will get into a routine and it will become second nature for you. I am babysitting the girls tonight!
