Going for genetic counseling tomorrow
My doctor gave me a referral since I am such a nervous ninny about anything that can go wrong, so we are going before we get PG so I can hopefully ease my mind but just reading through the information they sent made me nervous. 1 out of every 2,500 caucasian couples has a child with cystic fibrosis. I really hope they tell us we are fine and don't need further testing, so we can really get the TTC on the road.

Re: Going for genetic counseling tomorrow
Good Luck!!!
DH and I will also have to go for genetic counseling as well, due to the M/C I had last month.
... I am in the process of looking for a recommendation either on LI or NYC, as the doctor that I was referred to is no longer accepting new patients
If you like this doctor, could you please let me know (FM is fine)
TIA .. and again, I hope all goes well for you today

How did everything go today? How long until you get the results?

Re: Going for genetic counseling tomorrow
Today we only met with a genetist who reviewed our family history. She suggested I get tested for cystic fibrosis and Fragile X and DH get some kind of blood chromosome test. They are both blood tests. She said there is probably not much to worry about, but if I'm such a worry wart it will put my mind at ease. DH has some issues on his side, which is why I pursued this in the first place.
It was through a referral my GYN gave me for an agency called Genzyme. I met with the genetist at North Queens Hospital (old Booth Memorial). She said for the blood tests all I do is call my insurance and find out where I can get them done. I'll let you know what happens when I get my blood tests back. I honestly don't know what I would do if they came back positive.

Re: Going for genetic counseling tomorrow
I am glad to hear your meeting went well. Did they give any indication of a time frame of when you will receive your results?

Re: Going for genetic counseling tomorrow
Deb - To be honest, I didn't ask how long it takes for the results to be in. I just assumed however long it takes for blood work results to be in. I'm hoping to call my insurance today or Monday to get the information to set up the blood tests somewhere. When I make the appts. I'll ask how long results usually take and I'll let you know.

Re: Going for genetic counseling tomorrow
SIL's chromosome test results were 2 weeks. She called & nagged them down to a few days earlier.
Best wishes for the best results!

Re: Going for genetic counseling tomorrow
Not sure if it's the same type of tests but I was able to have a genetic blood workup done by Quest. When I started seeing my RE she sent me for it. I know I got tested for cystic fibrosis, fragile x and some others.
Good luck!

Re: Going for genetic counseling tomorrow
DH and I are going as well for testing next month. We want to make sure everything is ok with us too before we TTC. We have a lot of unanswered questions when it comes to his family history. We won't be TTC until at least next summer but I wanted to see a doc that came recommended to me before we move to NC.

Re: Going for genetic counseling tomorrow
My friend goes to RSONY and they now do genetic testing on the embryos bfore they get transfered. This is something supposedly new. She had about 10 fertilize and only 3 were good, the rest were all tested for Down Syndrome. I think that is wonderful that they do that.

My place did the blood work prior to my IVF cycle. My friends had it done on HER embryos before they transferred them back. They had to pay out of pocket. I think she said it cost $4200.

Re: Going for genetic counseling tomorrow
I called my insurance today (GHI) and they gave me a list of labs I could go for the bloodwork. According to the woman, all I have to do is pay my $15 copayment. I have to call the labs tomorrow and set up a time to go.
I'm not pregnant yet, so I don't know if that affects the type of tests and costs.
