going to ask a dumb question(ivf related)
sorry if this is dumb..i am just trying to prepare myself as much as i can since if this cycle does not work we will be moving on to ivf
from what i have read on this board and on the internet i understand the basics of it
what i do not understand is ICSI,PGD,using frosty's etc etc
what makes one need ICSI..is it more money..and when u use a frosty is it eggs u froze froma previous cycle? i am assuming that is extra money as well...and finally if u use a frosty does that count as another ivf through insurance? like if i have 3 in a lifetime isusing a frosty still considered one?
any information i would really really appreciate
thanks ladies
ooh..i try not to google thats why i am asking you guys lol

Re: going to ask a dumb question(ivf related)
I'm a little Ivf-dumb too but I think pgd is when they look at the genetics of the embryos, select certain oneself discard the abnormal ones. But from what I'm told, sometimes embryos can correct themselves so you might be discarding perfectly good embryos. it costs an extra $5000 or so but if you keep all embies and don't discard any you can freeze them and used them next cycle.
Frosties are a frozen transfer of the embryos left over from a previous cycle. It's Only $5000 because no meds are needed to stim. Not sure if it counts as another Ivf though. I'm not sure on Icis either. I think it has something to do with sperm but like I said-- Ivf-dumb.

ICSI is used with male infertility issues when they don't know if the sperm will fertilize the egg on its own. Therefore, they inject a single sperm into each egg. Good luck!!

If my memory serves me correctly, you have GHI.
With GHI, you have 3 cyles and a cycle includes a fresh and frozen cycle. So you really have 6 chances as long as you have frozen embryos.
I know Dr. B likes to use ICSI even when there aren't significant male factor issues. We have male factor issues, so ICSI was covered for us. You'd have to ask Dr. B about that.

I paid an extra 1k for ICSI for my first ivf because we only had 9 eggs to work with and wanted the highest possible fertilization rate. We have no male factor issues but did it just for that reason. I asked Dr.B ahead of time about it and he said the embryologist would make that call.
For my last ivf, I had 30 eggs retrieved and never even thought to ask of ICSI was used. I doubt it though, because i was never asked to pay for it like I was the first time.

We don't have MF issues and Dr. B never once brought up using ICSI.

I can't edit from my phone but wanted to add on to what Daisy said about the insurance. If u have the same one we do, it 3 ivfs and 3 fets, BUT u still pay separately for the fet. This was something I was confused about since I thought paying for the ivf cycle included the FET, since it was explained as all being part of one cycle.

From what I understand all of my fertilizations were with ICSI. I think Dr. B just does it. We have no MF factor or issues.

Re: going to ask a dumb question(ivf related)
PGD- preimplantaion genetic diagnosis. This is mainly used for couples who have a known genetic disorder in the fam or at higher risk for a child with one. This is done on day 3 of embryo life. A biopsy is done of the embryos (they take one cell) and they run the genetic testing on it. The pt then has a blastocyst (day 5/6) transfer of a healthy embryo. Some people also do this for gender selection and for screening for advanced reproductive age related chromasomal abnormalities. This can be very expensive and an outside company does the testing.
Cryo- if you have enough good quality embryos to freeze, they cryopreserve (or freeze) embryos, not eggs; that's a whole other animal. Women who freeze eggs don't have male partners. Egg freezing is still experimental and embryo freezing has way higher success rates.
ICSI- Intra Cytoplasmic Sperm Injection. When the embryologist looks under the microscope and takes the best looking, best shaped, best moving sperm and indivdually injects into the egg(s).
Unfortunately I don't have any answers regarding billikng but I think most insurance company's do things differently, but not sure.
I hope I helped

We did 2 IVF cycles (with Dr. B) and didn't do ICSI with either. That's what I was trying to say.

Re: going to ask a dumb question(ivf related)
W did not have Mf issues at all, husbands counts were great, and I had no known issues, and with both cycles we used ICSI. My first cycle w 24 eggs we did half ICSI and half not and my 2nd cycle w 12 eggs we chose to do it again. Both times had great fertilization rates.

Re: going to ask a dumb question(ivf related)
We were told they didn't think we'd need ICSI. Our ER happened and it wasn't until we were walking out on our ET day that they informed us that we owed them $2750! $1500 was for ICSI because we had over 20 eggs retrieved and he felt it was necessary, plus $1250 for freezing (even though first 6 month of storage is free). Wish they would've told us in advance... I was NOT expecting that!
