good neighbor fence question
sorry this is kind of long......
when we bought our house (in June) we knew the fence on the one side of our back yard was our neighbors.....and when he introduced himself to us he apologized for the condition of the fence and said he hoped to replace it next summer, and we said "thats fine and please let us know and we will contribute to the cost bc we would be significantly benefiting from the new fence too." our neighbor said "thanks that would be great, i will let you know"
so DH gets a call wednesday night this week from the neighbor and he says "the fence will be replaced on thursday and friday this week and just wanted to give you a heads up the guys will need to be in your yard too with the installation"
so DH says "really replacing the fence now, thats great. how much is the side portion of the fence so we can help you out with it?"
to which our neighbor says "forget about it, its my fence and my fault its in the shape it is and needs to get done for our dogs" (they have 3 little dogs)
and my DH had no idea what to say other than "thanks"
so now my question is what should we do for them to show our appreciation since they seem to not want our money????
we really did want to help them out with it and really do appreciate the new and fabulous fence they had installed......
thanks

my parents always split the cost, as have my neighbors with them whenever a fence was installed along a shared property line.
I would think a gift certificate to a local restaurant would be good. Just to say thank you, nothing extravangant.
Regardless of whether it is their fence or not, I think its a really nice gesture on your part to be so neighborly, and the same on theirs.

While you don't have to do anything since it is his fence, it is really nice that you do want to give a little something. Like a PP stated, a gift card to a restaurant would be more than enough. It's very nice of you.

Re: good neighbor fence question
While you don't HAVE to, it just leaves a good neighbor vibe. I like the GC idea.

Re: good neighbor fence question
We did not ask your neighboors to pay for the fence and that was a HUGE job.
A GC would be great!!!!

i think that depends on how friendly you are with them.
I would personally still go the GC route bc if it were me, I would feel awkward going out to dinner with my neighbors and them picking up the tab.....Id feel obligated to buy drinks or leave the tip or something. So I think a GC is a nice thank you, and while your there giving it to them, say like "heres a little something for you, tell us how you like the place, we've been meaning to try it. If you guys like it, maybe we can go out together sometime?"
