My first neighbor dilemma & a fence question
There's only one neighbor that we haven't officially met yet. And they're the ones who border our backyard.
I'm getting the feeling that they don't want to meet us because when they're outside, I will go out to catch them and say hello, and they'll suddenly dissapear.
Anyway, we caught someone outside today - the Mother of one of the owners - and she mentioned in her one-sided conversation that they are planning on replacing the fence.
Which is GREAT because WE were planning on replacing the fence.
If you were me, would you plan to go over and introduce yourselves? Or since they haven't extended that courtesty or seem that interested, would you NOT go out of your way, assuming that they'll just put up the fence on their own? In which case they probably won't ask for help paying for it?
I actually found a C.O. in our closing paperwork for that fence. The previous owners of this house put it up, so the crummy side is facing us.
Edited to remove fence questions that I found on the TOS website.

And is required or just customary that the crummy side of the stockade faces the person paying for the fence?
Ok - I could be totally wrong about this, but I remember hearing that the reason they do this is so people can't climb up the crummy side (there are cross-beams) and hopping into your yard.

I never even thought of that. I know our old dog used to use them to get leverage to jump the fence though so I suppose it makes sense!

Honestly, I'd save yourself the $$ and allow your neighbors to do the fence they want. As long as they don't intrude on your property.

I pretty sure it's a requirement that if you put up a fence, the crappy side HAS to face your property.

It is - at least in the Town of Smithtown. I went to their website and they had a FAQ that says so. Just for the reason that Vanessa said - the posts and the cross sections have to be on your side so there can be no access to your yard by the neighbors. Especially when there are pools involved.
I was looking for other answers though - how far back from the street the fence has to be (I live on a corner so my backyard borders a street), and if I can have a 6 foot fence around the entire backyard.
They have this thing about fences in your front yard - if permitted, they cannot be larger than 4 foot and must clear a certain amount of space from the curb.
As far as the neighbors go, I guess we'll go the way we're going for now and just not go out of our way to talk. It would be quite tacky for them to introduce themselves and in the same breath ask for $.
Either way, we'll be saving more money than I thought on the fence. I just hope they don't get something ugly!
