Good news re: my heart UPDATE AT BOTTOM

I don't know if I ever posted that I have a heart condition and we didn't really know how it would be affected by the pregnancy.

We weren't sure if I would have to go on bedrest or even be able to handle labor & delivery. I had an appt with my cardiologist last week and just this AM had my Echocardiogram...so far everything looks good!! Doctor thinks I will be fine for the whole thing. I was pretty nervous about this, so I'm relieved now! I will have to go back later in the pregnancy and just monitor myself, but I should be fine!! I will probably need to take antibiotics once I am in labor tho, to prevent infection during the delivery ( I even take them for dental work), but other than that, I should be fine. Chat Icon

Re: Good news re: my heart

What type of condition do you have, if you don't mind me asking? You can FM if you'd prefer.

I have a bicuspid aorta with stenosis, and like you, we were curious what that meant for my pregnancy and delivery when I was pregnant with my DD. After meeting with my cardiologist, I was able to stay with my regular OBGYN and just needed a fetal echocardiogram around 19 weeks to check on baby too (and met with the perinatologist to go over the results too). Thankfully I was ok and so was my DD. The fetal echo was awesome, got to see the baby in SUCH detail.

And I too needed antibiotics for delivery and needed a heart monitor for myself, but thankfully I was able to have a successful vaginal delivery (I need antibiotics for dental work too).

Good luck! Chat Icon

Re: Good news re: my heart

I had Rheumatic Fever when I was young (twice actually, which is extremely rare!). Most ppl have never heard of this, it's an illness from like WW2- people died from it back then. Thankfully now, we have modern medicine to help!

Anyway, bascially a strep infection got into my blood stream and attacked my heart. So, I have Mitral Valve and Aeortic regurgitation (holes in the valves which cause blood to leak and make my heart work harder to pump blood through my body). Thankfully I have no Stenosis (which is a narrowing of the valves) and although the holes are not tiny, they are not huge and I can function pretty normally. I do have a weak immune system from this and I do get tired faster than others and of course lose my breath a lot quicker. My whole life basically, I have been told not to exert myself and that I may one day need surgery to fix the leaks. So far (knock on wood), they seem to be holding up.

The antibiotics are to prevent further infection that could possibly attack my heart.

So glad to hear that you were able to have a successful vaginal birth, I was really scared about a c-section!

They haven't said I need a fetal echo- but from what i've heard, it seems your heart issue could be hereditary, while mine is not. It's caused by an infection.

True, that's why I needed the fetal echo. I do have stenosis of the aorta with mild regurgetation, so surgery in the next few years is likely for me as well. Thankfully a follow-up with my cardiologist after my delivery showed my heart didn't suffer any negative effects from the strain of pregnancy...I'm hoping you will be the same! Chat Icon

Wow, that's wild that you had it not once but twice!! Chat Icon

Yup, the antibiotics I need are for the same reason...so tainted blood doesn't further damage the heart.

Re: Good news re: my heart

Update:

Doctor's office called. She reviewed my Echo and I have an enlarged heart and a slight incrase in the leakage from the valves.

I should clarify that my Dr had told me she thought everything would be fine after my regular exam and EKG. The technician was the one who told me everything on the echo looked okay. He works in the Dr's office and has been doing my echos for about 7 years, so I trusted his assessment.

I have to go back in 2 months. Now, I'm kinda nervous.
