Good Sam vs. Southside
My OBGYN delivers at both and although I am not PG yet, I was wondering if you could share your experiences with either hospital as far as delivery? TIA

Re: Good Sam vs. Southside
So does mine and I choose Good Sam. Southside has fell down a lot in the last few years IMO. It is always dirty looking.

Re: Good Sam vs. Southside
Mine does both also and I am choosing Good Sam. My mom had my little sister there and my older sister had both her kids there. They had wonderful experiences with the hospital staff and the nurses. There is a lactation specialist that is very helpful if you choose to nurse the baby.

I was thinking of going with Good Sam also, but then my friend told me that because they are a Catholic hospital there are certain things they will not do if there are complications during birth. I was wondering if anyone knew anything concrete about this?

Re: Good Sam vs. Southside
I chose neither of them actually
Since both hospitals are Catholic hospitals they do not allow midwives to deliver. That was issue number one for me since I use a Midwife, not an OB/GYN.
They also do not allow in room nursery. Meaning the baby is not allowed to stay with you 24/7, which was issue number two.
After those two big issues arose, I stopped asking questions for both hospitals and went with NCMU.

I didn't realize that Southside is also a Catholic hospital. What is NCMU and was it a hospital that your OBGYN delivered at anyway?

I was thinking of going with Good Sam also, but then my friend told me that because they are a Catholic hospital there are certain things they will not do if there are complications during birth. I was wondering if anyone knew anything concrete about this? They will not perform any surgeries that are considered "birth control" however they will do anything that is being used to treat a medical condition (ie, they would not tie my friend's tubes, but they did perform a hysterectomy for another friend of mine who needed it).

My mom used to be an OB nurse for Good Sam. She now works in IT implementing the new Fetal Monitoring system for Catholic Health Systems. I worked there in college also. It is a good hospital. You are right.. they won't preform abortions or stuff like that but they would NEVER jeopardize your health! I just called her because she has a good knowledge of all the hospitals around and she said Good Sam. was better. She couldn't elaborate because she was in a meeting... Whoops.. Hope I didn't get her into trouble. She is really impartial about that stuff and wouldn't recommend it if she didn't think it was the better of the two.

Re: Good Sam vs. Southside
My doctor stopped delivering at Southside a few years ago, and now only delivers at Good Sam. I never asked about details, but I am assuming he strongly prefers Good Sam for some reason.

Yes, they will not perform elective birth control procedures.

I just delivered at Southside & 1) they just redid the entire maternity ward, its clean, fresh & the nurses were WONDERFUL
2) They encourage 24 hour rooming w/ your baby, especially if you are breastfeeding
3) I have nothing but TERRIFIC things to say about Southside...fm me w/ any q's.
4) Just curious who your Ob/gyn is, bc mine originally said they deliver at both & then I found out they only deliver at SS....I have dr. polidoro/dr. egner

Re: Good Sam vs. Southside
I just wanted to say thank you for asking this question, I moved into the area not that long ago and have been wondering which hospital would be better since they were both relatively close. I work for a construction company and I know that since North Shore took over Southside they have been doing alot of renovations there, but I know that has nothing to do with they type of care you get, so a long winded thank you for the opinions...

Southside is not a Catholic Hospital. It is part of the North Shore System.
I had DD at Good Sam and it was fine. I will be having my next baby at Southside, because I want to get my tubes tied.
As far as keeping the baby in the room with you at Good Sam, I was allowed.
As far as Southside, my friend is a Nurse who has worked at both. She said the maternity Ward at Southside is much more modern. They also now have a Nicu.

Sorry for the mistake - Southside is part of LIJ and not a Catholic hospital.
Nassau University Medical Center is the hospital I am going with. I know they are a "county" hospital but they have a relatively new maternity ward (about 7 years old) which includes in room nursery as well water birthing for delivery. And they also accept midwives.
Also helps my SIL works in admitting so she can have the rules bent for me (visiting hours, private room, and such).

Southside. Although I haven't delivered yet at either of them I have been to both of them enough times to visit friends in the maternity wards. I always liked Southside better and heard better feedback about them.

Re: Good Sam vs. Southside
I had amazing experiences at Southside with both of my kids - so much so that I have recommended it over and over to my friends. Several of my friends have delivered in the last 2 years at Southside and all of them were extremely happy with their experience. The maternity ward and the Delivery Rooms are not at ALL dirty - they were pristine. I had a private room with my own private bathroom and the nurses and staff were outstanding! I would HIGHLY recommend it!
ETA: When I was first looking for a hospital I was told that there were no private rooms in Good Sam and that the bathrooms were communal. This is what put me off initially. I don't know if that has changed. The other thing that made me choose Southside was that they allowed me 24 hour access to my infant and he was allowed in the room with my visitors if I chose to have him there. My understanding is that Good Sam is very particular about visitation and allowing the baby to room with the mother.
