good school district western suffolk/nassau border..wondering if you can help with our options...
My DH and I are in a predicament! we love our house (New construction) but dont like our school district! if we were to stay here ...we would send to catholic schools...but with our taxes EXTREMELY HIGH (bec it is a new construction) !! we are starting to wonder if it is worth it!
but we owe too much in mortgage so if we moved we would def have to take a loss in our house and dont know if we could afford a down payment in the new house!
I wanted to stay around where I am - Westbury/Carle Place/Mineola/Garden City area...but my DH just tonight threw out the idea that he is starting to think that our only option is to go out east...even though he works and commutes to NJ every day!
this way we could get a similar type house (newer) with lower taxes...
is this true...and what district should we look it to get a lot for our money...
all our family is in queens and nassau..so Ideally I would like to stay western suffolf/nassau border...I have friends in Dix Hills..I *think those are good districts..should I be looking there?!?!?
I know NOTHING about suffolk..I know queens and nassau!
Thank you if you got this far down my rambling!! I just dont know what to do next...$$taxes and catholic school $$ AND a SAHM is all NOT adding up these days!

I live in Dix Hills, and the school district (Half Hollow Hills) is great. I'm not sure what you consider high taxes, but I know we pay a lot...(FM me if you want more info) There are a lot of great school districts around here. If you were looking to stay in Nassau though...what about Great Neck? They have a great school district as well!

You are going to get so many different opinions on which districts are good/bad. Everyone has a different opinion of what is desirable. Here is my advice on how to begin your search.
Take a look on MSLI at houses in your price/tax range that you feel are desirable. Write down what school districts they are in. I would start an excel spreadsheet, word file or just notebook with the info as you start your search. Go to the Newsday school rankings and see where these districts stand. Then take a look at demographics for the area to see what you are comfortable with. After you have narrowed it down to 2-5 districts, I would start asking specific questions on here of those who live there. what services do they offer for those with special needs or college preperation? Do they have universal pre-k? What kind of community events does the area have? Ask about whatever it is that matters to you in a community/school district.
Here is the link for a site that provides demographics. There are a few others out there. http://www.city-data.com/

I grew up in DH & went to the top rated Half Hollow Hills school district. The taxes are high (idk how how your paying for your new construction.) I know that with the market the way it is you can get a house in dh more affordable than ever. Its def worth looking into. Good luck with whatever you decide.

I house hunted in many areas. I dont think you are going to find new contruction in any areas that are close to the border of nassau/suffolk in your price range and tax range. I would need to know your house price budget and tax budget to really answer this.
There are great SDs I could recommend BUT odds are you will not be getting new construction.
