Got some possible bad news today about Maddie...
We went in for Maddie's 9 month checkup. I showed the Dr. that Maddie seems to have a lot of pubic hair for her age. The Dr. seemed very concerned and is trying to get her in to an Endocrinologist within a week. She said it could mean early onset of puberty....WTH??! Ugh....now I am sooooo upset. She is otherwise healthy and is not showing any other signs of puberty (ex - she has no breast buds, no hair anywhere else)....anyone experienced this or know anybody who has?

Re: Got some possible bad news today about Maddie...
A friend of mine had gone through this with her DD as well. She was about 5 years old and needed deodorant, had excess of hair, etc. It was something they kept an eye on and I don't have any more details, but just for you that I have heard of this before

Sorry, I don't know much about it, but I'm sure everything is controllable and its not going to get in the way of her growing and maturing into a healthy young lady.

Re: Got some possible bad news today about Maddie...
My cousins DD did and she is now 12 years old and perfectly fine and normal She was under the care of an Endocronologist from a very young age and had her levels monitored frequently
She did grow hair early, but my cousin just took care of it and didn't make a big deal about it. She got her AF in 6th grade, which isn't uncommon from what I hear~

Re: Got some possible bad news today about Maddie...
I only have minimal experience with precocious puberty. BUT we have used 2 of the best pediatric endocrinologists on Long Island...
Dr Carey is affiliated with LIJ we've been to his office in Commack
Dr Angulo is affiliated with Winthrop and is actually the Director of Genetics as well as a Pediatric Endo.
Appointments with Pediatric Endos can be tough to get "quickly". I would suggest that if you have any problems getting an appointment have the pediatrician call the doctor directly for you...

Thanks. The Ped did call and we are expected to see the Endocrinologist within a week. Do you know why they are so tough to get quickly?
Thanks for the recs...we are in NJ, but I will need other names in case we need a second opinion

are you and your hubby hairy? I;m not kidding, some kids get more hair than others and it is totall due to genetics. Regardless, when it is your child you want perfection, so this must be scary, I would bet she is perfectly fine

I agree-I am sure that it is something they can treat/control now that they are aware.

I am sure Maddie is fine and dont get worried until you find out exactly what is going on. also i agree with a previous poster who said that it might be genetic if you or your husband is hairy your then maybe that is where DD gets it from.

I can only speculate why the appointments are so scarce...
My daughter takes special medication which means she needs to see the doctor every 3 months..some kids need to be monitored every month etc...this takes up a ton of appointments.
Then I think they bounce around from office to office which makes their availability less too...
I think they have more emergencies too...
You also wind up ALWAYS waiting FOREVER...
My daughter goes to a Pediatric Endo, Cardiologist, and Neurologist and I even if I have the first appointment of the day I still have to wait a long time

I would venture to say they are hard tough to get into quickly because they are highly specialized and there are most likely not a ton of them.....I know when I had to get my DS into a pediatric urologist there was only one in the area that took our insurance. Also wanted to send you some hugs.....I know how scary it can be when someone tells you something might be wrong

Re: Got some possible bad news today about Maddie...
Just read a later post, actually a week is pretty good for an endocrinologist. I need to get something checked out that's rather important and could not get an appt. until June with the first few I called (this was two weeks ago). I am going on Friday--took a little over two weeks for the appt.
There are not that many of them.

Re: Got some possible bad news today about Maddie...
I hope that everything works out well with Maddie.
As for endos. I see one, and I can tell you since they are usually booking appointments 3 months or more in advance it makes it hard. Also as the rate of diabetes and thyroid conditions increase the more patient load they have to carry. If your Ped called I am sure that the endo will see you ASAP. There is always professional courtesy and they will always take care of what another doc wants.
Please keep us updated.
