Re: Grandparent watching kids
I think you should take her up on the offer. It's great for you, your peace of mind, your child, and for her too (she gets to spend time with grandchild). I would trust that she would tell (or you would be able to tell) if somehow it was too much for her.
Besides, the amount of work a child requires will vary by age - you can say yes for now, and like you said, see how it goes. Later on, you might want your child in day care anyway.

Re: Grandparent watching kids
i would love it if my mom offered and i know she would but she lives 2 hours away. look at it as bonding time...how many kids DON'T know their grandparents??? i know mine b/c i lived with them for a number of years. therefore, i will have memories of them that my cousins in california will not.

Re: Grandparent watching kids
if i lived close to my parents which i don't...i don't think it would be fair to ask them to watch my kids FT when they have already done their share raising their own. Now, if they wanted to, then fine. But I know for a fact they are looking forward to enjoying retirement and traveling etc. I have a feeling they might relocate to NJ to be closer to us when they are retired so they may watch our kids once in a while but full time, I highly doubt it.

Re: Grandparent watching kids
I would NEVER have anyone other than my parents or inlaws (or SIL) watch my kids when they are young. No one will take care of your kids like you will, but the next best is your parents or in laws.
p.s- $500 a month for daycare is cheap compared to what I have heard.

Re: Grandparent watching kids
My brother and SIL had a baby in December and my parents can't get enough of him. They WANT to watch him. In fact my mom is a little disappointed she hasn't been asked to babysit yet.

I agree but the problem is i am worried about my mom and her health! And although i guess we can just see how it goes...it weighs heavy on my mind. I don't want my mom to be wiped out

Re: Grandparent watching kids
Right now my mom is watching my 5 month old daughter full time, plus she watches my 1 1/2 yr old niece PT, and she is 62. My dad is also home because he has Multiple sclerosis so she helps take care of him too. The thing is she LOVES having the kids there, they both do, and honestly she seems much happier and full of energy then ever before. Its like they keep her young. I am always watching to make sure things don't get to be too much for her but right now it seems like the best choice for everyone. She even tells us to have another baby so she can help take care of it while she is still young and able too! LOL......Now on the other hand my ILs want to babysit too, but I just don't feel the same level of comfort with them, so we have to wait and see! My advice is, if she wants to, let her help for 2-3 days a week.
