Granite tiles for kitchen counter?

Anyone do granite tiles instead of a full slab of granite?

If you have it, do you like it?
Do you wish you would have spent the $$ to get the slab?

We're considering this... but thinking we may regret soon after.

Re: Granite tiles for kitchen counter?

I am considering redoing our counter top in granite. I thought about granite tile but there is the grout which in essence makes just like tile. So you will have to seal the grout. I realized I did not want tile because of the grout and food and bacteria on my countertop so why do a granite tile? In essence it's the same. I am holding off on it and will do the slab.

Re: Granite tiles for kitchen counter?

I was considering it also, but now that the other poster has brought up valid points about grout, etc. I would be concerned. A lot of contractors are telling us that silestone is the way to go, no sealing, etc. but I am not totally sold on the idea just yet. I am also interested in seeing if others have used granite tiles too.

Re: Granite tiles for kitchen counter?

I have seen/read that the granite tiles can be installed right up against eachother so there are very little grout lines... but they are still visible.

I'd love to get silestone, but isn't it more expensive than granite?

I was just searching around and found this...

If you have existing counters, this may be a great option for you!!

Re: Granite tiles for kitchen counter?

Thanks for the website I am going to show it to my DH.
As for the silestone, Sears told us it was less $$ by not much than granite, but other contractors that we have got qoutes from told us that it is either the same in price or more than granite.

Re: Granite tiles for kitchen counter?

A friend of mine had granite tiles. Unless you looked very closely you couldn't see the grout lines. She had no issues with the sanitary aspect of it. No one was getting sick regularly, etc.

Thanks Jenn! We're looking to do a dark color, what color did she have?

Re: Granite tiles for kitchen counter?

We did granite tiles, they are butted up against each other, the grout lines are hardly visible. I will admit sealing was a huge PITA.

I don't have any good pics, but I don't regret it. We spend a few hundred vs. a few thousand, and it looks great.

She had like a dark coppery color... I am not really familiar with granite colors. It had darker brown specs in it though... Very pretty...

I love that the recycled glass counters are "green" but they are very pricey too!

Yes most places say the tiles are 50-70% less than a full slab.

This is pretty much exactly what ours look like.
We got the tiles and grout from Home depot. For the edges, we brought them to a granite fabricator and they rounded out and buffed the edges. If you are going to do it DIY, its also worth investing in a wet tile saw. We got one for about $80.

That does look great! Do you think it will look as good with dark granite (we're most likely going with black)?

We could do it DIY (although i'm sure DH is DIY'd out at this point!) if we go the tile route and DH has a wet saw. We're going to a couple of granite yards this week so we're going to price everything out.

Re: Granite tiles for kitchen counter?

WE have it - we didn't do it ourselves, the previous homeowners did. I like it, but I would have preferred the slab. I definitely can't say anything bad about it, and if you are on a budget and want granite I would recommend it.

Yes, totally, just get a dark-colored grout - you want to try and match the grout the best you can to the color of the tiles.

Re: Granite tiles for kitchen counter?

We just did Black granite with copper specks in it (galaxy) My hubby dad and uncle put it in themselves.

My parents have granite (the same galaxy) they spent 3000.00 for their full slab. We have a much bigger counter and the tiles cost us about 530.00 plus grout and the glue stuff ( Chat Icon ) was another 200.00 The grout is black so you can't see it and they lines are close together. We have a special cleaner that has sealer and grout cleaner in it.

I have never heard anyone say they were worried about bacteria and what not. Lots of newer homes are being built with tile counters (if the new owner couldn't afford granite) It's not like im rubbing chicken all over. Any counter can carry bacteria.

All in all I LOVE my counter!

Im at my parents but when I get home I will post some pics!!

ETA My husband got some kit on Ebay for the edges. rounded the edges himself with the scraps of the tiles
