Thanks! The granite slab was just to much money for us. Like i said my parents have the slab. My aunt did the granite tiles in her kitchen and we saw it and loved it so we did it. Family friends moved to GA and they came up and she loved the counter so much she is having my dad and uncle go down and do it in their kitchen.

We got our tiles at Home Depot Expo. My aunt and uncle got theirs at Home Depot.

We just did Black granite with copper specks in it (galaxy) My hubby dad and uncle put it in themselves.

My parents have granite (the same galaxy) they spent 3000.00 for their full slab. We have a much bigger counter and the tiles cost us about 530.00 plus grout and the glue stuff ( Chat Icon ) was another 200.00 The grout is black so you can't see it and they lines are close together. We have a special cleaner that has sealer and grout cleaner in it.

I have never heard anyone say they were worried about bacteria and what not. Lots of newer homes are being built with tile counters (if the new owner couldn't afford granite) It's not like im rubbing chicken all over. Any counter can carry bacteria.

All in all I LOVE my counter!

Im at my parents but when I get home I will post some pics!!

ETA My husband got some kit on Ebay for the edges. rounded the edges himself with the scraps of the tiles

It looks very good!

The issue I am having is the grout. Although you can indeed put it together very closely. I used to have a tile counter top and it was a nightmare with the grout. Kind of the same to keep clean as the floor.

Did you seal your grout?

Thanks! We have a sealer that you just put over the entire counter and it seals the grout and Granite. The cleaner we use is a granite and grout cleaner. Our grout is dark so you can't see stains, What color tile were going to do. If it's a dark color you wouldn't use white grout.

ETA I have a tile floor with white grout NOW that is a pain to keep clean, BUT people are walking on the floor a lot different then the counter kwim.

So you could do a tan grout. Not as stark as white!

I honestly never thought about germs and grout. I still don't see how it could hold more germs then a regular counter. Counters are germy Sinks are even worse Chat Icon Sorry Chat Icon Chat Icon

The grout is a porous material. Most countertop are non porous so when you clean the surface, it's really clean.

Yes. You can seal both the granite and the grout so that stuff can't seep into the pore spaces.
I was totally against the idea too - I hated the look and maintenance of a traditional tile countertop - but this is totally different. The tiles are very close together and it is easy to keep clean - no scrubbing grout with a toothbrush or anything like that.

Never heard of it, thanks for letting me know. From a quick search I just did it seems to cost less than granite.

OK. You understand what I am talking about with the tile countertops.

I may rethink it then though. That would be so much cheaper for us.

I was turned off by the grout thought.

Yes we did some research on quartz and silestone. It is more expensive than granite from what we've read online. We're going to a granite/stone yard tomorrow so we're going to ask about everything!

Oh I did not know. Although I did not quote it, I actually thought quartz was cheaper than granite as a granite alternative.

Re: Granite tiles for kitchen counter?

Some of the things coming to the market now is recycled glass counter tops. Have you looked into that? I'm not sure it's available to the public though - I work for an architecture firm and they have begun to spec some of this.
