Graphing lessons...
4th or 5th grade teachers...
Any ideas on how to introduce graphing.... i have lots of worksheets on reading graphs, but want sometihng that will get them motivated and start the unit off right.
ideally i wanted to find graphs in media (magazines, newspapers) but not having too much luck...
any ideas?

Re: Graphing lessons...
I teach 6-8th, but I usually have them pick their own topics, interview their classmates, and then make the graph from their own data. I find they really get into it because it's a topic they're into.

Re: Graphing lessons...
We used information from a getting to know you chart to introduce bar graphs and pictographs.

i definitely have them gather their own data from classmates, then have them analyze it and discuss it, then graph it. You could also use M&M's or Fruit Loops. Something random that could be sorted by color.

Re: Graphing lessons...
I agree with the pp. For bar graphs, the kids partner up and choose a topic. They then create their data sheet and choose a grade level to survey. They tally their results and create a bar graph (This is only after we have gone through what they need to have etc...) Ive done group graphs with M and Ms also.
My son had a teacher one year who had them tally phone calls received for a week for each member of the family and graph that.

ohh....hmmm.. Id say a good intro might be "Ok guys, this is no doubt going to be on your NYS Math Exam. Learn it. Period." hmm...that might be a bit harsh.
yes, looking for graphs in print is a great idea. I usually just do a rationale, maybe ask for examples of WHY they might see this in their lives. I might even as THEM to find a graph of any kind for HW.

We're reviewing graphing before we go onto the bulk of the 5th grade stuff. To introduce it, I'd write a mess of numbers all over the board. Ask them to interpret it. Then put them into order and graph them. That'll show how useful graphs are for taking data and putting into a more useful format.
