Also, some of my favorite teachers were those who joked around with us, were sarcastic or funny.
And, as far as the trust issue goes, trust is built over time, and if I hadn't built trust with them over years, then I wouldn't be able to have the kind of bond with them that I do. If I didn't have that kind of relationship, then yes, it would probably blow up in my face. But, I have been there for these kids, so they trust me, and they know me, so I can tell them I have a line-cutting pass to Great Wolf Lodge without scaring them for life. I learned my lesson with this post, for sure. I thought maybe people were familiar enough with me and how dedicated and passionate I am about teaching and would get it, that it was a silly prank, and see the humor in it.
Agreed totally, and I don't know you! With everything going on in this crazy world now, people let a silly post really get to them...sad! Your kids are lucky to have a fun teacher like you who can joke around with them, but still be an authoritative figure and role model...kudos! My sis teaches in the south Bronx too...so I know all about it! Good luck, and don't let a couple of comments get you!
Thank you! I was starting to be like "OMG, maybe I am a horrible person and I don't even know it!" If you knew me in real life, I have a good sense of humor and I see humor in everything, so it makes sense that I take that to school with me, and the kids like it and expect it from me! Its all a balance. Thanks for the nice words!

I don't think you are a horrible person at all. Now that you explained yourself better, it's fine. If your students expect joking around and see the humor, then obviously it works for you.
My 8th grade son is special needs, his teachers also joke with him a lot. He loves to joke with his aide. But, if they joked around with him regarding GWL, he would be disappointed, and would be talking about it FOREVER, not even kidding. That is why I was taken back by your post. I could just see my kid coming home everyday telling me he would be getting a front of the line pass, and then his teacher saying just kidding, and him being upset.
But you know your students best, and we were only going on a couple of lines you wrote on here. I don't know you, and don't remember anything you have written, your dedication, etc. so it obviously came off wrong.

Re: Great Wolf Lodge
It's all good! I sometimes talk on here without realizing that not everyone knows me or what I am about. My brother has autism, and I am a really dedicated special ed. teacher. I teach K-2 students with autism, but I run some programs at my school and work with a lot of the kids, including the ED kids so they all know me.
Without knowing that, I totally get why I sounded so mean. I am used to the people I talk to knowing that I would never do anything to hurt or disappoint a kid with special needs!
Sorry for any confusion, and lack of context. I was talking how I would tell that story to someone who knows me, and not everyone on here knows all of that about me!

Re: Great Wolf Lodge
PS-I would NEVER tell my students with autism this. They would totally believe me and be crushed. Those kids don't get sarcasm, so THAT would be totally mean, if I joked like that with them!

Re: Great Wolf Lodge
LOVE Great Wolf, we go every year and The groupon was such a GREAT deal, it was VERY reduced rates and I was kicking myself that we were not able to use it!
Theres a lot to do inside.
As far as the chlorine, its not super bad, but the bleach will hit you. I am mildly allergic to bleach and thus chlorine as well. One year was horrible. I looked like I had 2nd degree burns all over my face and arms from it, and then last yr I got a little red eyes and a little arm redness but not too bad, so I guess it depends.
