Guidance counselors job market
Hi Ladies, I am a guidance counselor and have never really found a stable job. The job market is basically non-existent in this field. In 6 years I worked at two non-profits as a counselor assisting HS students (1 at a college/1 at a HS). Both were low paying, but good experience. I worked 1 year in NJ as a guidance counselor, then got excessed. I regret getting this degree because there are no jobs. Every year I get less and less interviews, meanwhile schools are pumping out more graduates. 1 job opening gets thousands of resumes. It's like winning the lottery. Anyway, I am just wondering if there are others in this position? If so, what do you do for work? Do you plan to go back to school? If so, for what? Thanks!!

Re: Guidance counselors job market
When I was searching for a guidance position, I was also looking into jobs in college admissions, academic advising, non-profits. I know a few people that totally left the education field altogether.

Guidance counselors job market
Please ladies, don't give up! I searched high and low for a guidance counselor position on LI and only ended up with a leave replacement, however, I was lucky enough to get a job in NYC DOE. I have to say that you have to start some where and it has been the best experience and decision I have ever made. I have been a guidance counselor in NYC for 7 years in counting and even pursued an administration degree while working closely with administration. Have you guys applied in NYC? Also, working at a college advisor in admisisions will help build up your resumes. Don't give up! Guidance counselors are needed in our schools and If I hear anything I will fm you guys!!
