Gym Vent and Question

So today I didn't get to leave work til about 7 and I was contemplating skipping the gym, but I decided to go and get a really quick work out in..

As I am on my first machine (lat pull down), this trainer comes over and is like-- you are doing that wrong you know... and while I will totally listen to him-- I don't want to do anything wrong, but I have been doing this for years in public and no one ever said anything to me before. And a fitness professional taught me how to do everything in the first place-- I didn't just make it up..

Whatever, not the issue-- I was trying to get in and out of there in 25 mins and this freakin guy won't stop talking to me! Talking all this crap, I am not following what he is talking about, etc. Then, he is like, are you married, how old are you-- says, you look good for your age. Um, I am not that old, tells me I am gorgeous, etc. I don't know if he was trying to sell me a fitness package or get my phone #. I was just SOO annoyed he was taking up my time.... every moment is precious.. I don't want to first be getting home way after 8 and eating dinner. I really HATE it when people talk to me at the gym.

SO... now to my question....

On the lat pull downs, how have you been told to do the exercise, as part of your back routine.

But how, do you pull the bar in front of you, or behind your head??

Also, do you sit straight, or lean back slightly?

that is what I was doing and what everything I goggled is telling me.

Ugh, I am so angry-- this guy totally ruined my work out. Wasted my time, and then thanked me by hitting on me. Chat Icon

This is why I always wear my headphones! I hate when people try to talk to me.

Lat pulldown is the bar comes down in front of you, to the chest level. You lean back lonly a tiny bit and arch your back as you pull down to really contract the lats.

What was he telling you to do?

Re: Gym Vent and Question

I usually always have them on-- but, I didn't get a chance and I was rushing...

I have just been googling a bit... This video is perfect.

From the Mayo Clinic-- health expert and reputable authority!!

This shows the WRONG way to do it-- which is what the "trainer" told me to do... vs the RIGHT way, which I was doing.

I would say something to the gym owner. Not to get him in trouble, but the guy is supposed to know what he's doing and obviously doesn't. If he winds up getting any clients, they could hurt themselves.

Re: Gym Vent and Question

yes-- behind the head and with my arms wider apart at a lower weight with more reps-- which I know is another approach to weight training, but I have also been told, you should always try to do as much weight as you can without getting tired. He told me I would slip a disc and he never has seen someone do the lat pull down that way who HASN'T slipped a disc. And the fact that it hasn't happened to me makes me lucky.

I have never seen this guy at the gym before, and I recognize all the other trainers.

AND even if he was trying to get new clients, he still was inappropriate with me. I would never tell one of my prospective clients that I thought they were attractive in an inappropriate way.

eta-- oh, and he also told me to do jumping jacks to tone my arms. Chat Icon

Re: Gym Vent and Question

yes-- he was a trainer and he was wearing his trainer t shirt and told me he would leave some forms at the front desk for me.

You have no idea how much this guy ****** me off... I was SOO annoyed that he was talking to me in the first place, and then when he continued to treat me like I had no idea what I was doing, and THEN objectify me... and tell me I look good for 32. 32 is not what it used to be-- and there was no way he was like 22-- he looked weathered.

JJ tone your arms?Chat Icon
In his defense, were you doing the pull down behind your head/neck?

If you want to avoid people, wear headphones, you don't even have to turn them on, just pretend.

I actually did the JJ arm movements this AM while on the precor and after a while, it does hurt your arms a little-- so I kinda see his point with that. But, I would never generalize and say that JJ help to tone your arms.

For the lat pull down-- he told me to do it behind my head.

I was doing it in front-- properly.

He asked me if I wanted to grow wings... I was like, w t f??

I would not listen to him!

Particularly for women, a move like a lat pull down (behind your neck) puts a lot of unnecessary strain on your rotator cuff and the negative potential for injury outways and benefits!

well, the whole reason he told me to do it that way was because he said I would slip a disc if I did it the other way!

I am leaving here and going to the gym in the next half hour-- if this f*cko tries to talk to me again, I will give him a piece of my mind.. although, that would mean I would need to talk to him more.

What would how you position the bar have to do with your lower back discs? In either position (or any strength) you should not arch your lower back.

I THINK i might have seen him... but he was just arriving there. I got there an hour earlier yesterday, so he may normally be working later, which is why I never really saw him before. And he was wearing street clothes, as opposed to the trainer outfit.

I kept my head down so as not to have any eye contact whatsoever.

I did still have people try to talk to my WITH my headphones on... My favorite question-- why don't you smile more often?? Um, because I am TRYING to work out so leave me alone MoFo!
