Rude People vent/question
OK - so we are buying a house. We are thrilled.
When we told certain family members, they asked "how much are you paying?" - for that question, I have no problem answering, bc they can find out anyway....most of them didnt ask.
However, when it comes to "how much will your mortgage be, isnt that a little rude?"
my aunt "Alice" called my aunt "Betty" - aunt Betty is also our lawyer - Aunt Alice is friggen nosy - and was asking Betty how much our mortgage was, etc. Of course Betty knows this info, but she called me to let me know that she was asking all these questions - she didnt tell her anything.
and of course thanksgiving will be at Alice's house -so i need to be prepared on how to respond - I need a good zinger - help!!

Re: Rude People vent/question
that is rude! IMO even though your price is public info I think it's impolite to ask how much you paid anyway....
If she asks how much your mortgage is, just say something back like "why, do you wanna help with the monthly payments?!"

Re: Rude People vent/question
I like the replies above. But I'm with you, asking what you paid is one thing, it will be public info soon enough, but asking what your mortgage is, is along the lines to me of asking "how much do you make in a year"

Re: Rude People vent/question
That's a little extreme asking how much the mortgage is especially because so many factors go into it. Can you say something like - "not too bad, we can afford it"

Re: Rude People vent/question
That is very rude...and completely none of her business. If I had to deal with this I would have one of two responses:
1. Why, do you want to pay it off for us?
2. HUGE....VERY VERY HUGE.

Re: Rude People vent/question
Wow - at least you are prepared! I can't believe someone would ask you that.....
Even though they can find out how much you paid i still think its a little rude to ask.

Re: Rude People vent/question
its so rude, but hey folks will ask that. Its like this summer I was wearing an empire waist shirt and one of my in laws friends asked when the baby was due? Hello, I'm not preggos, never have been and don't really have much of a belly. Needless to say I have NOT worn that shirt ever again.
I would just respond with "It's a lot because its Long Island" and leave it at that. It is none of their business nor should they be asking anyone other than you two.

Re: Rude People vent/question
I think that it is rude for anyone to ask how much anything you buy is
including your house, rent, car, mortgage etc
and I HATE the "do you mind me asking" preface
well ya already asked the question, so why ask if I mind?

I agree - you should ask her why she wants to know... Totally puts her on the spot!

Re: Rude People vent/question
I would say that the only people who need to know are the ones paying it so once she let's you know what her monthly contribution will be you can tell her.
How Rude!
Good for you for having such patience.
