had a situation today..... wasn't allowed to leave my school building.
A man who works in my school (not sure of his title) did not allow me to leave the building today after dismissing my students.
I asked him why we weren't allowed and he said it was the principal's orders... but gave me no other reasoning.
For 10 mins, he stood there and would not allow the teachers to leave.
Is this allowed!!?!?!?!!?!??!? I went home in a RAGE today!!!

I would talk to your union rep....Under contract you are there when the kids are there. You should have been given a reason why you had to stay.

we've had that situation, but we had to keep the kids in as well. Long story. It was for everyone's best interest though.
Was it still within your teacher time? Or after?

It was after. The bell had rung and my class was no longer in the building. I am still so mad about this!

We had the same thing-There was a suspicious person in the building...actually happened a few times. Turned out to be nothing,
But having just the teachers wait with no explanation is weird

After teacher time - that's ridiculous, and I'm sure illegal. When I worked in retail we couldn't detain shoplifters because it was unlawful to hold them in the building. I would tend to think this is along the same lines.

No details were given. I'm going to find out what that was all about tomorrow but I am still angry about it.

If that were me, I would chalk it up to having a good reason.
Plus it's only 10 minutes- to me, not enough to be pizzed off.

as adults you should have been informed of what the problem was.
if it's after your contract hours, they should NOT have been allowed to keep you hostage with no explanation.

I agree, but at the time I didn't know it would just be 10 minutes.

I hope you spoke to your union about this. It seems totally illegal to me. Did you find out what the reason behind it was?

Did you get an explanation today? Keep us updated!
Turns out it was an issue with a raging parent and they wanted to keep the teachers inside while security escorted the parent out and he/she was gone from the parking lot.
Never an ordinary day in this job, huh.
