had my amnio today--updated w/ a question on bottom
So, yes, I decided to go ahead with it. I feel more like a weird feeling than any actual pain. They were so super duper careful when they did the test. I have fibroids and they measured them and pinpointed their exact locations to make sure they didn't hit one. It took quite a bit of time for them to figure out exactly where to put the needle. In the meantime, I was just looking at my baby. During the test, I only looked at the screen once b/c I just focused on my breathing. DH watched everything.
They tried to find out the baby's sex, but guess what? The baby had it's legs closed. We'll know soon enough.
When I went to bed last night, I was thinking of the families who have suffered losses due to amnio complications. What is important is that I made an informed decision and I can only hope that it was the right decision.
At this point, with my exam being finished, I have to ask that people with the comments such as "I would never have an amnio," put them elsewhere. I considered the entire range of opinions while I was deciding, but I don't want controversy while I am recovering. As it is, my mind wanders and I think of all of that anyway.
I'm also still suffering from morning sickness. I am glad that we are finding out the sex because I keep focusing on the idea that we will have news soon and that gets me through the bad days. As I said, we each make decisions based on what we think is best for ourselves (whether to find out the sex, what tests to have, etc.)!!!
I hope to report back tomorrow that I feel better and in about a week or two I hope I can say that everything is fine and I will tell you or .
If you read all of this, THANKS!!!!

No flames here- and if anyone has anything to say, I'LL kick em in the shins.....
The risks of amnio are even lower than previously reported. To me the piece of mind is totally worth it.
Glad it went well- can't wait to hear whether team Pink or Blue!!
ETA: I have some pretty large fibroids as well. They suck- big time

You made a sound decision that you felt was best for yourself and your baby. No one can fault you for that, you gotta do what you feel is right. I hope it all comes back wonderful!

Re: had my amnio today
I had an amnio. It was DH and I's choice.
Just make sure you rest .... I mean REALLY rest (feet up, etc...). They told me the 1st 24 hours were crucial.
I actually laid down for 3 days. I had some cramping (they had warned me) but everything was fine.
Drink LOTS of water.

Re: had my amnio today
I know you gave this decision much thought and you did what was best for you, DH and your child. No one should ever have comments against you doing whatever you feel is best for your family.
Please keep us posted when you get your results. I hope you are lying down in bed!

Re: had my amnio today
I had an amnio and know what a tough informed decision it is. The advantage is that you will know the sex without any errors so you can go paint the nursery pink or blue.
I felt a little sore after mine but after a day or two of resting in bed I felt just fine afterwards.

Re: had my amnio today
Thanks everyone. Sorry if I was too harsh on anyone who is against this procedure. I just didn't feel that this is the time for me to argue and I knew that I would not just leave it alone if someone had a negative comment. I am resting okay. I haven't fallen asleep at all since I got home but I sort of wish I would.

Re: had my amnio today--updated w/ a question on bottom
If it were not for amnio, I wouldnt be here. I would never have been conceived at all. So you can imagine, I am all for it. I plan on having an amnio when I get pregnant too. There is no question about it. I too am informed and family history combined with my knowledge/work experience as well as my age gives me every reason to have one.
You and your DH made an informed decision for yourselves and should be able to live free from judgement. I hope you are able to rest comfortably as you wait for the results.

Yes.
Stay in bed, or on the sofa, with your feet up for 2 days.
You can go back on Thursday.

When my water broke from my amnio it was over 24 hours later. Maybe staying in bed a little longer couldn't hurt - but keep in mind, I had an anterior placenta which increased those risks even further

Re: had my amnio today--updated w/ a question on bottom
I don't think that anyone berated me while I was trying to decide, but there were some strong opinions. I wanted them at the time, because that was the time to hear those opinions. For today, I just didn't even want to have anyone say anything like, "Well, I would never have done it, but I hope it works okay for you." It could be a very innocent thing to say but I was not in shape for a statement like that today. I did feel that I needed to post and ask for the support that I get from telling you all what is happening. I guess I can be a little selfish about exactly what I want on the day of my amnio--and if the amnio debate were discussed on another thread today I would not have had an issue with it (maybe it was discussed, I only read a few things today).

Re: had my amnio today--updated w/ a question on bottom
Glad everything went well. Take care of yourself.
BTW, my OB mentioned that the rates for amnios are affected by OBs performing the procedure who do not have experience and this is what affects the curve. So I am sure your procedure was safe and sound.
