Had our EI Evaluation Today
and we qualify based on an at least 33% gross motor skill delay. Even though Matthew has now begun crawling last week he still is not pulling to stand or taking cruising steps. They evaluating him on the level of an 8 month old. They think he physically can do it but mentally he is hesitant. PT was here and gave me some good tips on how to work with him. She does really think he is just on the verge of catching up and thinks that there is a high possibility that by the time the meeting takes place he probably will be doing all the things they're looking for.
The two evaluators were very sweet and helpful. They were surprised he even qualified based on the other skills that he showed right off the bat. Here is how he scored on other areas (btw, he is 12 months)
cognitive - 17-21 months
fine motor - 14 months
sensory - no concern
communication - 14-16 months
Social emotional - 10-14 months (what scored him down here was that he doesn't do mirror play but that is probably more my fault that we don't play in mirrors at home -- evaluator wasn't concerned)
self help - 13 months
So he really does seem to have a lot of strengths which I'm happy about and made me feel better about this whole thing. In two weeks we have our meeting to write up the plan and then take it from there.
Thanks to all of you who suggested I call...i do think a lot of my original concerns are behind us now and that he is going to get it soon. And if he just needs some extra help I'm fine with that. I'll keep you updated!

Personally - I think that is a great evaluation. He's doing really well and like the evaluator (in my non-professional but totally Matthew adoring way) think that he will catch up quickly in those few areas and will be doing everything by the time they meet with him again.

Sounds like it went well. My friend's daughter walked on her knees only until 17 months and bam - one day just starting walking upright. I think he'll do it - it might take a little time, but I definitely think he'll get there.

Re: Had our EI Evaluation Today
I was thinking about you all day.
I'm glad it went well.
He was certainly pulling himself up to standing on Saturday - he kept using the door of the playhouse to pull up.

yes, I'm relieved the eval. is behind us. Now we just wait to see when services begin if he'll even need them anymore. We're going to keep it scheduled and play it by ear.
Truthfully, i was not surprised that he checked out normal in the other areas. They were never a concern to me but I was happy to hear that my lack of concern in them has been confirmed now.
But it does sting just a tad when they told me he was on par with an 8 month old on gross motor skills. However, because I truly in my heart know that he is going to be fine in the end I can pretty easily talk myself down from being upset. It was just a temporary setup and they are going to help him.

really? without assistance? I missed that (bad mommy). I know he tries all the time to get up but if we're not there to assist he either gives up and moves on or cries.
I've only seen him pull to stand in his crib once. In the report they said that his postures are mature but his transitions aren't. He is having issues with knowing how to shift the weight from hip to hip. That is basically the things she wants me to work on in the interim before they can get him a PT service set up.

I was just going to post the same thing! I saw him do it at least once (maybe more). He also pulled himself up to standing holding onto my fingertip. Keep in mind also, this was on a blanket on the uneven grass! I am so glad the evaluation went well though. It must be SOO reassuring! He will be off an running in no time at all!

Yeah Lisa and Matthew! I am so happy to hear that the evaluation went well. Man, Matthew is just moving right ahead in all the other areas... just a matter of time before you are chasing after a little boy running away from you!

I understand that sting feeling all too well. I have the same feeling about my daughter. Emily will be fine, she just needs a little kick start. Her preschool teacher described her as a rocky train going down the right track. It is hard to see your child struggle, but we are getting them the help they need. Emily has come such a long way in the past few months. Mommy on the other hand has had some major issues with it. It is really teaching me a lot. I am so glad you are feeling better.
