Yeah I saw his position. I don't know if he's good for working families or not. I really don't know. Frankly I don't think anyone Trump chose would have made anyone here happy. Honestly. So it's not like I could say "Well so and so would be better" because I have no suggestions. I can't say who would be worse, either.

You know?

This whole thing needs to end already.

All I hear is:
This guy/girl is in the swamp
This guy/girl is inexperienced
This guy/girl said something a decade ago
This guy/girl is connected to someone who said something a decade ago

All I can think is
NO ONE in politics is ever clear, fair, honest, right or really going to change much for the average Joe. None are really middle class themselves are they?

Some of the quotes I've read are pretty gross. Talking about how automating jobs is beneficial bc machines don't get sick, injured in the job, or sue for sexual harassment, etc. Sure, all that is true but if getting rid of workers and replacing them with machines is your idea of how to eliminate job related injuries and sexual harassment I don't think this is the job for you.

I read those quotes and I do not take them the same way you do. I don't think he's trying to eliminate job related injuries and sexual harassment, I think he's trying to avoid the problems that come with hiring humans in general. But I am also pro-automation in any job that you can because overall that makes for a better quality of life for everyone in the long run.

Ummm. . . except for the people forced out of those jobs.

A lot of times people in those types of jobs do not have the qualifications for many other of jobs and will need job training to be able to become re-employed. Can't say I really expect anyone in this administration to put allocating funds for job training at the top of their list of priorities.

Yes, except for the people in those jobs. And that is rather unfortunate for them but that is PROGRESS. I know it may sound heartless but that has been happening since the industrial revolution. Really probably since the beginning of time in one way or another. Would you really suggest not advancing technology to spare some jobs? Should we have insisted that Netflix not be allowed to exist so that the people at Blockbuster didn't lose their jobs? There's a million examples like this. That's life.

Yes, but where do you draw the line? Also, many of his supporters voted for him because, among other things, he built his campaign opposing this to save jobs. So, this is contradictory to what he's sold his supporters.

I completely understand what you are saying, and yes, it makes sense, but man, it's something else to hear that people who have worked years and years at a job would be eliminated for automated systems.

I have a good friend who has worked at McDonald's forEVER and that is what she does, and she works hard, and contributes to her family. Shame that she and many people like her could be eliminated.

I understand what you are saying and it does suck for people like that but this is technology. Don't you like not having to wait on line at the grocery store because you can use the self check out? Well, 3 cashiers lost jobs because of that. But this is progress and we shouldn't try to stop it so someone can continue her career as a McDonald's cashier. You have to think of the bigger picture.

Acknowledged.

However, I think the problem with Pudzer is he is just focused on saving money by automating functions and replacing humans because humans mean recurring expenses (salaries) and liabilities (slip and fall, discrimination lawsuits as he said).

On the flip side, one could focus on creating jobs related to these new technologies so our workforce adapts and the middle class survives (retraining and education- like who's going to fix the robots when they break).

But then again, he is the CEO of a crappy fast food chain, obviously focused on money making not furthering the interests of the labor force. Great pick for labor secretary, Donnie. Chat Icon

Totally agree. Of course technology is progress and we shouldn't slow it just to keep jobs. I do think, however, that we need someone in the position who's focus is still on job creation. It can't end with, robots are better. That needs to go straight into, what is next for these workers and how can we prepare them for those jobs. I would love to hear his ideas on that.

One of the traps hrc lost is bc she told coal and steel workers they need retaining bc their jobs aren't coming back. Trump won by lying to these people and promising their jobs will come back. Even with a resurgence in those areas, they are already more automated and far fewer workers would be needed. They need new ideas on how to make a living.

Exactly. The mentality of "too bad, you were replaced by technology. Go figure out what to do next" is what's problematic. Technology and progress are good things, but the human cost has to be addressed too.

So theres got to be a balance. Maybe investment in job training for current employees of companies who want to replace their jobs. Itd be nice to see emoyee value by big corps

Technology advancement is moving at lightning speed faster than we've ever seen. It may take a generation to see the change in labor force. Those coal miners we hear of are doing the same job for several generations and the youngest of them are going to need training in industry with demand.

Asian countries are already seeing fully automated (robots) building cars and fast food places. There is no turning back we have to figure out ways to keep up

There has to be some kind of balance. Otherwise we are going to end up with mass unemployment of unskilled workers and even more wealth concentration near the top.

I am not against technology but is having our fast food served by robots really the best we can do? Who will be benefit? Are rude and slow fast food workers the worst we are dealing with? Meanwhile our infrastructure needs improvement and we need renewable energy.

The human cost needs to be taken into account, otherwise what's the real benefit?

In my experience there's usually still a line to use the self checkout most times, and the process gets dragged along because the system stops and tells me to flag the associate after every. single. item. I scan. It ends up taking longer than if a human cashier had just checked me out. Faulty systems like this are not progress to me. We're still not there yet.

So many thoughts---

1. I don't care what anyone says. There is a certain type of person who sees and sexualizes and objectifies women the way those gratuitous commercials do. There's a reason that no other fast food places do that. There is something wrong with their corporate ethos. It does reflect and influence the way in which women are seen and not taken seriously.

2. Most people who talk about ridding themselves of sexual harassment lawsuits by ridding themselves of workers--not of harassment--tend to also not hire women for the same reason. They also tend to blame women for their own harassment. Not a great mode of thinking.

3. It's fine to be pro-progress, but when you don't believe in any social welfare nets or a livable minimum wage and your whole goal is to maximize profit by eliminating jobs...you're kinda anti-worker at that point.

Wasn't Hardee's alsto the one to perpetuate the stereotype of Italians in the mafia with their ad for their gross chicken parm sandwich?
