Has a debate on here ever changed your mind?
Just wondering.
Some of us have very strong stances on things.
I'm wondering if you've ever seen or been part of a debate on here and done a 180 on how you felt about that topic?
And if you would like to share, what was the change?

I have not changed my views but I have been able to see the "other sider of the coin" whereas in the beginning of the discussion, I could not

yes, definitely.
kind of related, until a thread on here i had no idea that "oriental" was no longer a politically correct term. i'm college-educated with a professional career, and i really had no idea. boy, did that wake me up!

Re: Has a debate on here ever changed your mind?
Yes, debates on here (or LIW or some chat board...not sure where it was exactly) have changed my opinion on breast feeding in public.
I used to think moms should hide, go to a bathroom (I can't even believe I felt this way once) or do whatever they needed to cover themselves when bfing. Several points raised during one debate a few years ago changed my perspective and my opinion.
I have some opinions that are so strong they can never be changed, but since I don't know everything about everything (shhh!! don't tell my DH) a good debate can sway me.

I don't think I've ever had a complete turnaround but I've definitely learned a lot and thought more about my opinions.

Re: Has a debate on here ever changed your mind?
depending on how educated i was on the topic before the debate..
i think a lot people have opinions on subjects that they know hardly about it... just bc you read news headlines or one book about a subject does not make you educated about that topic.

Re: Has a debate on here ever changed your mind?
OOH but a debate on here HAS changed my mind on how I feel and view certain posters. For instance, I may feel like I like someone more because of the way they handled themselves or I may conect with someone who I never connected with before because we have the same POV or I may no longer like someone because of the way they carried themselves or the their inability to add nothing of worth to debates but more tension and repetitive childish remarks

Absolutely!
To answer my own question - I never saw the big deal with going to a pet store to get a dog/cat before.
Now I'm much more informed about it and know that next time I won't go there and I try to educate others.

I always try to be aware and respectful of other's opinions....
With that said, no I do no think I have ever changed my mind about an opinion and I'll tell you why.....
Almost all of the "debates" that occur on here turn childish or viscious and rude and therefore force me to check out early....
ETA-my statement is strictly in reference to NFR.

I agree. So many potential debates just turn into a fight, where people keep insisting that something is offensive. There is rarely an intelligent debate- they are usually just fights.

Re: Has a debate on here ever changed your mind?
Not completely, but definitely opened my eyes to other points of vew.
One example was on Parenting a few months ago, there was a discussion about a mom who was suing to get extra time during a medical liscensing board test because she needed to pump breastmilk. Bxgell2 gave some great arguments and as a result made me see the whole situation in a totally different light. I relish those types of debates, I just get nervous because I see how quickly it can turn into a personal attack or how someone's words can get twisted.
ETA: I don't think it has to get nasty/turn into drama, but I think it's more likely to happen on an internet forum versus face-to-face because sometimes our meanings can be misconstrued in our posts, sometimes we can appear harsh when we don't mean to, and sometimes we are emboldened to say things behind a comuter screen we would never say in person.

Funny, I must have a totally different perspective of this site, because I feel like most of the debates, at least the ones I've been involved in, have been very intelligent and respectful, and beyond enlightening.
I don't think I've ever changed my mind, but I've definitely learned to see things in a different light. Particularly with a few of the debates on Parenting, like, the use of binky's and for how long, and the debate about a woman who was suing for more test-taking time to accomodate her BFing.
There are a number of ladies on here who speak so eloquently and intelligently, that I truly enjoy engaging in a debate with them.
You know who you are

Glad to see I wasn't the only one who enjoyed that debate!
Oh, and I agree I have seen a number of debates where people have been respectful of each other's opinions. So it is possible...

While I can see different points of view (may not always understand them or agree with them), no, a debate on here hasn't changed my mind about something I have strong opinions on.

I agree. I think there have been some GREAT debates on here.
I do however think there are one or two topics that we are NEVER going to have WITHOUT getting heated and nasty.
They usually involve animals.
Or peeps.
