Has anyone come across a house
thank is similar to this one
within an hour of NYC.
I am woefully in love.
but it is too too far for us.

Re: Has anyone come across a house
I've seen houses like that on the North Shore (oyster bay, locust valley, glen head, manhasset, syosset, etc.), and also in Bethpage and parts of Farmingdale (lenox hills section).

Re: Has anyone come across a house
There are many quaint and charming houses in the area I live in. We looked at a ton of them when we were house hunting, unfortunately my husband found these charming homes to be too "spooky" for him. I'm in NJ, but just under a 30 minute train ride to NYC and with no traffic I can be in the city in about the same.

There's a nice old farmhouse for sale in my area, but it's on a semi-busy street, Greenlawn Road.

Re: Has anyone come across a house
I know a few people who commute to the city from Poughkeepsie every day. It's not impossible. But longer than an hour I think.

Re: Has anyone come across a house
I like the pool.
this may sound odd, but it's a little more land than what I am looking for LOL.
the city girl in me would get lost!
I was just telling dh last night how I would love to restore an old farm house one day. or a carriage house. or a barn. something to that effect.
but it's quite lovely.
Cathy,
it's 90 mins on a good day. and my dh has clients on LI...it's just too far for us, sadly.

I LOVE these types of homes. DH not so much BUT I will have one one day. ETA: I love looking at the homes in Brightwates & Bayport. I know there's more I just can't think of them right now.

Re: Has anyone come across a house
it's possible to commute - it looks like it's right on the train line. My cousin commutes by train from dutchess to pleasantville (westchester)
Locust Valley sometimes has houses like that.
I know this is contemporary, but it looks like it has a room that could be a library locust valley
Here are some others
1920 - needs LOTs of work, but has that farmhouse feel
not great pictures, but cute farmhouse on nice sized property (but semi-busy road)
pricey, but looks like it has a library
ETS: sorry - I missed the part where your DH has LI clients

Those houses are both on busy roads.
I was also going to suggest Sayville, W. Sayville, and Bayport-Blue Point but you have to do your research.

Re: Has anyone come across a house
The link wouldn't work for me but if it is the type I am thinking it is, you can find that in NJ in areas like Westfield, Scotch Plains, etc.....less than an hour from NYC.

My dad lives in Dutchess and I grew up there--the train is about 2 hours. My brother commuted to the city for a few years from Poughkeepsie, but it's a rough commute.
Armonk and Bedford in Westchester have some very nice old homes like that.
This one in Armonk looks really cute from the outside.

Re: Has anyone come across a house
Here's a few in Babylon - express train to Manhattan. Not sure of your budget so here's a wide range...
Inexpensive Babylon
Good location - decent kitchen
I love this neighborhood
Love this house - in town, on a semi-busy street
Newer home but older style
Good luck in your search!

Re: Has anyone come across a house
What a lovely house!
We're going to be putting our house in Oceanside on the market in a few months, it's a 1920's colonial that's not as farmhouse-ish or as big, but let me know if you're interested!

Re: Has anyone come across a house
Have you looked in Rockland County at all in areas such as New City or Nyack? My old boss lives there and its about a 45-60 minute commute to Grand Central (door to door).

I'd also suggest looking in Nanuet, Pearl River or Suffern - they have trains that leave directly from there and go into Hoboken (which is nice for a downtown commute).
ETA:
This one looks nice - in Valley Cottage just north of Nyack:

Maybe check Babylon village? DH loves older homes and we checked out a few open houses there last summer. i'm not sure of the NYC commute time though.
