I was just telling dh last night how I would love to restore an old farm house one day. or a carriage house. or a barn. something to that effect.
but it's quite lovely.
A girl after my own heart!
I LOVE these types of homes. DH not so much BUT I will have one one day. ETA: I love looking at the homes in Brightwates & Bayport. I know there's more I just can't think of them right now.
BLUE POINT
SAYVILLE SAYVILLE
Those houses are both on busy roads.
I was also going to suggest Sayville, W. Sayville, and Bayport-Blue Point but you have to do your research.
I was going to say the same. Sayville has a LOT of very charming homes. There are a lot of nice towns... but this is the town I know best!

Re: Has anyone come across a house
I commute from Peekskill and that is 1 hour train ride. Poughkeepsie, if you catch right "super" express train, picks up in Beacon and then expresses to NYC, it's about 1 hr and 30 minutes. But Poughkeepsie is a nice town, it's low in taxes, very close to Stewart Airport which is close to becoming an international airport (if you like to travel it's a bonus), and there's a decent mall and alot of shopping on Rt 9. The train commute stinks but it's express most of the way depending on what train you take (and you'll always get a seat as the train starts there) but the ticket will cost $300 if not more, per month.

I'd also suggest looking in Nanuet, Pearl River or Suffern - they have trains that leave directly from there and go into Hoboken (which is nice for a downtown commute).
My friends just bought in Pearl River. It's a great family oriented town, and very quiaint and charming, with nice restaurants and one heck of a Paddy's day parade every year It's near NJ border (great for filling up car with cheaper gas) close to highways, close to Palisades Mall, and you can commute either by train or express bus. My friend takes the train since the stop up there is a block from his house and drops him off near his job, and he said it's 1 hour long and he loves the commute, not too crowded and the seats are comfy

I pass this house a lot and I don't think I've ever seen a car there! I'd fix it up, though!

I wish we lived in Lloyd Harbor or Lloyd Neck. The house I posted is in Huntington, but near the Centerport & Greenlawn border (by Oldfield Middle School.)

Wow I love that chimney. I wonder what this looks like on the inside-taxes are nice if they're correct.

I bet that it isn't great on the inside, since it's "as is" I would think the taxes are correct, my sister's ILs live in a 100+ year old house (same school district) and they only pay $3K ish

Re: Has anyone come across a house
WOW! I love both of these!!
Greenport is just too far for us ...e. Northport is a tad bit better, but I think we are more than likely going North rather than east.
I am so excited that you girls are adding homes to this thread though....nothing is written in stone and it could help someone else out too!
thanks so much!

You should check certain areas of CT. My brother lives in Ridgefield CT and they have tons of homes that fit your description and it's only about 45 mins - 1 hour from NYC.

within an hour of NYC.
I am woefully in love.
but it is too too far for us.
especially the dining room and the library.
My Aunt lives right by this house in Poughkeepsie. This house is more than an hour away from NYC, more like 85 minutes plus, 20 minutes to the metro north station.
If you look in Northern Rockland, Putnam, or Southern orange counties you will find a hour commute to NYC and a house at a great price. GL!

Ridgefield is a longer commute than 45-60 minutes. There are no direct routes to NYC. The nearest station, Branchville, is at least a 90 minute commute to Grand Central and there are very few trains. The other option is taking a 20+ minute drive to Katonah and then taking a 60+ minute train into Grand Central.
There aren't many affordable options in CT that are within an hour of NYC.

I meant 45-60 minutes driving... I didn't realize the public transport situation there was so bad... Sorry!

My aunt & uncle live in Ridgefield, CT. It's beautiful there!!! My uncle commutes to the city every day and has for 10+ years. I'm not sure which station he goes out of, but it must not be that far b/c he rides his bike in the summer.

The commuting options from there aren't great, but I'm sure a lot of people do it. Ridgefield has great schools and is more affordable than many of the other towns that have direct train access to NYC.
I only commuted via Metro-North, but I'd think the drive into NYC during rush hour would make the commute pretty long too.

Re: Has anyone come across a house
I have no idea about your price range, but if you decide to look at CT, you may want to check out Darien, Fairfield and Westport. Darien and Westport are about 1 hour from NYC. They're pretty pricey, but the towns are very nice. Darien
Fairfield has a slightly longer commute (about 75 minutes), but it's a great town. It's very family friendly and is one of the more affordable areas along the Metro-North New Haven line. #1
