maybe I can help. I have had so many issues with dd - it's finally getting to a point where she sleeps the night. I can tell you what I did and what worked and where I failed.

That sounds pretty expensive. Have you talk to your ped? Or read some of the popular books - Happiest Baby on the Block, No Cry Sleep Solution, Healthy Sleep Habits Happy Child (my fave)?

They are "experts" in sleep issues. You can have them come to your house...phone or email consultations.

My girlfriend has been having issues wit her daughter since birth. She is now 2 years old and falls asleep between 12am-2am and will wake up after 4 hours of sleep. She rarely naps during the day.

I would love to give her the #, do you have one?

Completely off topic, but have they had her evaluated medically to rule out neurological reasons or physiological concerns? That type of sleep pattern seems more then your average.

Ugh...where do I start. We have always had issue...first it was colic and that went away. Then he was doing really good for a while...going to bed around 11 waking about 2 times during the night. Then he started not falling asleep until 1 or 2am...but pretty much sleeping through still...waking 1 or 2 times.

For the past week or two he has been crying out every 1/2 hour...not exagerating!! It's so bad he sleeps with us in bed because I don't have the energy to get out of bed that often. He starts out in the crib but for maybe an hour at most...then he's up every 1/2 hour. Even in bed with us he still wakes that often but he only cries for about 10 seconds and goes back to sleep. I noticed last night that when he wakes up and cries he reaches out for me and pulls towards me. It's like he gets uncomfortable cries out...finds a new position...on my chest or in my armpit and goes back to sleep. This repeats all night long.

Our problem is we only have 1 bedroom. I asked for advice on CIO in Oct and planned on starting but I don't know if it's possible to do it sharing a room so I keep putting it off.

He also cannot fall asleep on his own. He needs to be put down in a deep sleep to stay asleep.Chat Icon

I tried the swaddle me and miracle blanket during the colicky time but it turned out he slept better on his belly so I wasn't able to use them.

I'm ok with Rylan waking 1 or 2 times but it's about every 1/2 hour. If he's in the crib there's no gerting him back to sleep...if he's in bed with us he will but still constantly wakes up and cries out.

At about 6 months my ped told me I needed to start putting him down sleepy with something that comforted him. He would never go for it thought...he would just scream and scream.

I have the HBOTH and it gave me some pointers when he was colicky...especially the shhhshing noice. I aslo have HSHHC but wasn't really able to get into it. Maybe I should start it again.

The first thing I'm going to suggest is getting a nightly sleep routine established. Decide when you want him to go to bed and work backwards. Say, if you want him to go to bed at 8, start your wind down at 6:30...bath, book, cuddle and then bottle. He's old enough to start learning to go self soothe. Put him down in his crib and let him cry for 5 minutes, go back in and rub his back and 'shhh' him. Go back every 5 minutes for the first night. Second night, make it 7 minutes. He knows what is going on and how to get what he wants. The first week will be hard and then it will get better and then he will revert back to his old ways to try to get what he wants. You are going to need to be regimented and consistant. I would also start establishing a nap routine too. That will help.

With my second, I learned to let him cry for a little while on his own and he now sleeps like an angel. With DD, I ran to her every sound and she expected that in the middle of the night. I had always been very firm about bed time routine so for about a month, she would cry for up to an hour (I would go in and soothe) every night. Now, she goes in great.

It's hard to comprehend how very manipulative they are even at this age. He knows what he needs to do to get you to bring him to bed and that is what he is doing. He is also falling into a bad routine and you need to break that sooner then later.

Does he use a pacifier?
Could it be teething? Hunger?
Maybe add some cereal to his bottle before nighttime...
DD stayed in our bed a very long time and to be honest, I opened her crib straight into a full and shes been in it without a problem. Dont feel bad about creating what you "think" might be a future problem. Focus on what you need to do to get a good nights sleep for now.

You said you only have 1 bdrm so I am assuming he is in his crib in your room, correct? Maybe the sleep disturbance is him knowing you are right there?

When DS was younger, there was a period of time that he would wake every hour. It ended up being that he was teething. I would give him a dose of Tylenol and he would sleep through the night. Is Rylan teething?

I have also heard of kids waking frequently when they are cold or hungry? Maybe give him some cereal before bed.

We have no routines going on at all right now...he basically runs the show. He normally falls asleep between 6 and 6pm but it's a nap for him...he only sleeps for about an hour and half then up until after midnight.

I can get aways with CIO for bedtime but not sure if it's possible during the night wakings because we share a room. Do you think it would work if he sees us in the room with him?

I hate that he's in bed with us...I know it's a bad habit to break and would like to break it sooner than later.

Since he goes to bed so late and wakes up so many times he ends up sleeping pretty late. Do you think I should wake him up early to start the day...or let him sleep?

I see what your saying about being manipulitive...I noticed it last night when he was reaching for me to make sure I was still there.

I never took to the pacifier...used it just for a few weeks when he was a newborn. I actually tried it a few times after that too. I don't think it's teething because he has 6 teeth and it has never really phased him when they came in.

When he's in bed with us I don't get any sleep lately. He is all over the place when he sleeps...rolling in every direction possible. I end up putting my pillows vertical on the bed and hang on to the edge to give him the room he needs. I actually layed at the foot of the bed and watched tv from 3-6:30 this morning because he was all over the place and I couldn't hold on any longer...lol. He's also not sleeping well in bed with us either...better than the crib but still up every 1/2 hour or so.

Yes...he's in with us. I def think that could be part of the problem. I thought about getting one of those wire curtain rod things and hang curtains to seperate the room when we sleep so he couldn't see us.

I think routine and leting him know that you are the boss is going to be a great place to start. I am a firm believer that setting a bedtime routine is key to a good sleeper, and yes, sometimes there are setbacks, but all in all CONSISTANCY is the key to this, whatever you choose to do, make sure its the same every single night. I think you can train him, just be consistant.

Good luck!

Sofie(SMDL) mentioned that maybe he was cold also. I was putting him to be in the Carters 2 piece sets and a blanket. I went out yesterday and bought feety fleece pj's to try out. Last night was no different though. He gets a bottle every night before bed...that's the only way to put him to sleep. Maybe i'll try cereal later in the night before bed.

I don't even know what time to make his bedtime. He always naps in the evening and doesn't stay asleep. Ideally 8 or 9 would be great but how do I choose?

I know it probably would be rough for a little bit, but I'd try to skip that 6pm nap. He is old enough that that one, one hour nap is not a deal breaker and that may make bedtime a little easier on you.

And I don't know how comfortable you are with it, but Christopher is a blankie kid. He loves his blankie and he did at Rylan's age too. And I thought blankie when you were describing how he rolls into you to get comfy, he needs a comfort and you are it right now!

I hope it gets better, I know you are frustratedChat Icon Chat Icon
