Coldcuts were a NO from my doc. Unless they are heated. But I've had a bite or two of non heated sandwiches. I'm not a big coldcut fan to begin with, so its not a big deal.

Yes, I have heard of it. We aren't supposed to have deli meats. I have heard that it was b/c of nitrates but I have also heard that it is b/c of listeria. Maybe we are just supposed to limit it but I am not sure. We could go crazy with all these rules. It is both. The listeria is apparently only a problem if the slicers are dirty, are shared with the cheeses or if the meat is not kept at the proper temperature. Also if it is "old" and the deli has a low overturn it is supposed to be avoided as well.
That's not true. Listeria can come from the place the meat was packaged, not the deli itself. It really has nothing to do with how clean (or how dirty) your deli is. You could have a clean deli and still have contaminated meat because it was contaminated in the factory.

I was told to avoid cold cuts for the same reason you avoid soft cheese - listeria bacteria. Thus far (21 weeks) I've had ONE turkey sandwich. I'm really dying for a bologna sandwich.
