I wouldn't take out a bathroom to do it- but I think it's a great idea otherwise
losing a bathroom can effect the value of your home- and in this market that is very risky

Re: has anyone know anyone who has or heard of a laundry room
I think a laundry room belongs on the 2nd floor - that's where most of the laundry gets put away.
I wouldn't take out a bathroom to make a laundry - I would try carve out a closet or something to make it work.

Re: has anyone know anyone who has or heard of a laundry room
I've heard of it before. Some I've seen had a concrete floor with a lip around the edge about 4" high to contain any water if they hose became disconnected or there was any other kind of flooding problem. Last thing you want with a washer on an upper floor is to have it dump it's load of water all over the floor, to leak into the ceiling below.

Re: has anyone know anyone who has or heard of a laundry room
We had this in our house growing up; on the 2nd floor but it was sorta in the "sun porch." Ideal b/c no up/down stairs & its where the clothes originate.
Like the OP said I don't know if I'd rip out a bathroom to do it though

Re: has anyone know anyone who has or heard of a laundry room
2 of my friends have their laundry rooms on the second floor. I agree I would not take out a bathroom for a laundry room. Definitely find another way to add it. Maybe a closet in the bathroom. My one friend has this in her 1/2 bathroom. It's concealed so you don't see anything or even know it's there.

Re: has anyone know anyone who has or heard of a laundry room
I have heardof this more recently - but what if there is a leak or the washing machine overfills? It could be more messy being upstairs.
My friends just built a house and had the machines put into a closet - you really don't need a ton of space.

Re: has anyone know anyone who has or heard of a laundry room
It's fairly common here in new construction. The only concern is when something goes wrong. But that can happen in a bathroom too I suppose. They usually put something additional under the washer just in case. I would love a second floor laundry room but this house didn't have that either. Oh well someone other than me carries the basket up and down.

Re: has anyone know anyone who has or heard of a laundry room
yeah, it's pretty common these days.... but I agree with others... what if the washer floods
I wouldn't remove an upstairs bathroom unless you will still have at least 2 up there..... upstairs bathrooms are priceless
you could possibly do a compromise, and install a stackable washer/dryer in the bathroom, and put it behind a pocket door.....

Our washer and dryer are on our second floor & I love it, but I would NEVER remove a bathroom to have them there. I would remove part of a closet to have them upstairs.

How many bathrooms do you have on the 2nd floor to begin with?
As for any potential flooding issues, just make sure the floor is waterproofed with a drain just in case something like that should happen. Also, are you sure your 2nd floor can withstand the possible vibrations?

Re: has anyone know anyone who has or heard of a laundry room
I used to have one in my townhouse and loved it! I really miss it! It used to be so easy to keep on top of the laundry. Now I have it piling up because I never feel like dragging it up and down the stairs.

Re: has anyone know anyone who has or heard of a laundry room
We have our washer and dryer on the 2nd floor in one of our bathrooms (there are doors that seperate the washer/dryer from the bathroom. We have a drain in the floor, and it is the best decision we made during our renovations. Like the other posters said, I'm not sure that I'd want to lose and entire bath upstairs...

Re: has anyone know anyone who has or heard of a laundry room
In a majority of the newer houses they are building they are putting the laundry rooms on the 2nd floor. DH's cousin has one next to the bathroom upstairs and it is great. She doesnt have to lug the laundry up and down the stairs from the basement like I do.

Re: has anyone know anyone who has or heard of a laundry room
My cousin and my brother both have their laundry rooms on the second floor, and it's really convenient. (Ours is in the basement.)
I wouldn't take out a bathroom to do it, but if you otherwise have the space, I think it's a great idea.

For me, it's actually a toss up!!
I don't have a second floor but when I've got an overflowing hamper, I certainly sometimes wish the washer/dryer wasn't in the basement!!! Especially since DH seems to always forget bringing it down is one of his chores!!

I have ours there too. Yes, make a closet for one, don't take out a bathroom.

Re: has anyone know anyone who has or heard of a laundry room
How many bathrooms do you have already in the house? If you have two bathrooms I wouldn't take one away to make a laundry room but I know when I have a house I want a laundry room on the second floor or even the first floor just not the basement.

Re: has anyone know anyone who has or heard of a laundry room
we have a laundry "closet" on the second floor. Its just big enough to have a stacker w/d in it which I think is perfect. Doesn't waste any house space....

Re: has anyone know anyone who has or heard of a laundry room
My best friend has this. She had a very large linen closet in her upstairs hallway so her DH decided to make it a laundry/linen closet. I WISH I could have that, instead of lugging laundry up and down 3 flights of steps
