Yes. This is becoming very desirable because usually bedrooms are on the second floor, so laundry doesn't have to be lugged up and down stairs.

Apparently its getting to be really popular, I mean most of your clothes live upstairs right...why lug everything up and down when you could have it all upstairs.

In my dream house kids, in my dream house.

My friend did it and it is awesome. No carrying laundry up and down the stairs.

Wow, that's a LOT of bathrooms. I'm guessing you can probably get away with removing one of them! Chat Icon

Re: has anyone know anyone who has or heard of a laundry room

you could possibly do a compromise, and install a stackable washer/dryer in the bathroom, and put it behind a pocket door.....

Thats what I was going to suggest. My dh's friend just did this and it looks great. And as for the laundry rm being on the second floor it sounds like it is starting to be very popular.

I think a laundry room belongs on the 2nd floor - that's where most of the laundry gets put away.

I wouldn't take out a bathroom to make a laundry - I would try carve out a closet or something to make it work.

I agree

Most of the new homes here in FL have the laundry room on the 2nd floor... I love that and hope to have that when we get a house!

Re: has anyone know anyone who has or heard of a laundry room

My girlfriend has this. They added a second floor to their house and built a laundry room up there...she doesn't want to have to walk all the way down to the basement and then all the way back up to the second floor with the clothes. There is a drain in the center of the floor in case of a flood and I believe her laundry room is directly over a bathroom.

My parent's have it on their 3rd floor and wouldn't have it any other way. I think it is fantastic. It is right next door to the master suite. They had to put some sort of tub like think underneath incase of a flood and a drain.

Re: has anyone know anyone who has or heard of a laundry room

We are redoing our house and we made sure that the architect put our laundry room on the 2nd floor

We will have 4 bedrooms, 2 full bathrooms and the laundry room upstairs

I wouldn't take out a bathroom to do it- but I think it's a great idea otherwise

losing a bathroom can effect the value of your home- and in this market that is very risky

ITA - I like the idea,but wouldn't give up a bathroom for it. -

Re: has anyone know anyone who has or heard of a laundry room

I have my laundry room off my master bedroom (2nd floor), and once will do the large addition, the laundry room will move to another room off the main 2nd floor hallway.

I love having it there, it is so easy!

You can put a drain in the floor so that if there is an overflow you will be ok.

we thought about this when we thought about expanding our 2nd floor. We would do a big master suite with master bath, walk-in closet and laundry room. the idea of not walking up and down stairs is orgasmic!

since you have 6 bathrooms - sounds like a good idea!

ITA, do not take out a bathroom and replace ti with a laundry room, as a buyer I would have paid way more for another bathroom thant a laundry room upstairs.

Re: has anyone know anyone who has or heard of a laundry room

I moved ours upstairs when we re-did our house. We made our office (which is our 4th bedroom upstairs) closet into a washer/dryer closet. Honestly its one of the best decisions I have ever made. LOVE IT!

They put a special drain on the second floor and a heat vent for the dryer. Does not really bother the babies when they are sleeping and I am doing wash at night.

My laundry room is upstairs, right next to my master bedroom....amazing I love it. I hated hauling everything downstairs, to bring it right back up again.

My DH draws up houses for clients all the time with a laundry room on the second floor. DH said it is very common.

My parents are STILL kicking themselves for not doing this back in 1985 when they put the dormer on their house.
The contractor asked them if they wanted the laundry room upstairs and my mom thought the contractor was nuts..LOL...

Well, here we are 22 Years later and they are kicking themselves.

I say...Do It! I WISH we could, but, don't think it's possible.

This is philby. Many homes today have the washer/dryer on the second floor due to proximity of the master bedroom. Most everyone gets undressed in their bedrooms! The only problem I have seen is when the washer hose or tub leaks then it is a big disaster. Anytime we install second floor washers they sit in a custom built metal pan/tray which is high enough to hold water if there is a leak and hopefully someone notices before it overflows. The washer/dryer are usually in a closet and the floor is always tiled in there. We never put down hard wood in theses closets.

Re: has anyone know anyone who has or heard of a laundry room

We just added another floor to our house and we put the washer and dryer up there, near the bedrooms. There is a drain under the washer and a drain pan, so if there is any leakage the water will go right into the sewer - no worries!

My BIL had a mansion (literally) built in Garden City. On their 2nd floor they have a laundry room. They also have another one on the first floor. So they don't have to carry the baskets like the rest of us schlubs Chat Icon (j/k)
