I have a friend who is going through the same dilemma, and I hate when I see people discouraging her! (even though it is often coming from a "I'm trying to save you some heartache" place) Is it super hard right now in NY, and possibly also in FL? Probably. Most definitely.

But if its something that in your heart you KNOW is the right career path for you, then you should do it. Rarely is something worth doing easy.

Do you dread going to work each day? If so, I would try to make the switch. Can you work and go to school at the same time? I don't know many teachers that dread going to work everyday. I know many people in corporate literally sick every day because of what they have to deal with on the daily. Chat Icon

My eyes twitch when i am here, my stomach is always in knots, I LOATHE it. And I just feel like maybe I'm not cut out for this....other people don't seem as miserable as me at work. Maybe I made the wrong choice and now is the right time to fix it. I know it's not an easy road and the grass isn't always greener on the other side. But on this side of the fence....it's just dirt.....I just want the sun to shine on the other side....the grass will hopefully come if I am happy with what I'm doing!

I think about it often. And most people tell me to follow through on it. I have a Masters in Chemical Engineering already, so I'd be looking to teach Jr high or high school math or chemistry. Just not sure where to even start or where I'd get the funding.

I did. I never want to discourage anyone but it has been 5 years and no permanent job. It stinks financially, it stinks not having a job to go to or be secure. I hated my previous career so I don't regret it. It was just a huge financial loss to us.

My cousins are teachers in FL and my cousin who's been teaching for like 8-10 years told me today that she JUST cracked $40K. She used to waitress on the side to try to make ends meet.

DOn't do it unless you are sure. But I think it is a very risky move here on the island...if you are willing to move it may be a different story.

I personally think you'd be making a BIG mistake doing this. It's next to impossible to get a job on Long Island and it's not even so easy anymore in the NYC schools, especially in the borough of Queens. IF you do decide on this path, I'd stick with either Secondary Math or Science, ESL, or possibly Library Science. Good luck in your decision, it's truly disheartening now being a teacher anywhere with the up-and-coming changes.

I asked about Library Sciences awhile ago and was told it's not a great idea either (unless someone can tell me otherwise, because I'm kicking myself I didn't do that in the first place).

I was a sub for six years, and made under $20K a year, no benefits, no sick days, no pay for school holidays. My district also didn't pay salary for leaves. So I was making sub salary and doing parent-teacher conferences, planning, etc. In the district I worked in, if you were excessed, you would get called back for any open positions for seven years. They just started calling back from that list last year-a list that's 50 people deep.

This was in elementary education. I can tell you special ed is just as oversaturated now. What I would suggest, as everyone else has, is going for something that is in demand (right now that is ESL).

I just took a job outside of teaching because I couldn't wait. And I knew it wasn't me. I would get leaves I wasn't even certified for because my principal was so supportive of me. But being miserable isn't good either. Life is too short. I would just do a lot of research before jumping in.

Best of luck to you.

I did this. If you are leaving NY go for it. If you are staying, I would say only do it if you are willing to work in NYC schools. You can usually find a job there - it's not as easy as it was before salaries increased but it is possible.

Good luck!

I left higher education administration to go into teaching. I did the Pre-K Scholars program which is kind of like the teaching fellows but for Pre-K. It has definitely been worth it for me!!! I say go for it and see if you can find a way to get it paid for or save on cost some how. Good luckChat Icon

Re: Has anyone left Corp America and went to become a teacher?

I taught in FL for 5 years and earned my Masters there, too. I started at 30k and left at 31 w/a M.S.Ed & 5 years experience. Most of the teachers I've worked with down there have since left the profession due to the low salary, lack of professionalism and respect and work overload. I have 2 who became principals, of those 2, 1 left to become a financial adviser and 1 is still a principal in a charter. 1 friend left to be a RN, another is now a mortgage broker and a 3rd took a job in an office building. Sadly these 3 women were phenomenal teachers...dedicated and made HUGE differences in their students' lives. :/ Teaching in FL isn't like teaching in NY.

I moved to NY, got a job on the island, was laid off & now I'm teaching for the DOE. There are times, more recently, that I feel that ed isn't what it once was. However, if it is your passion...follow it so you live a life without regrets..nothing in life is easy but some things are so worth while and you could be THAT teacher for someone. :) Good luck. If you stay in NY look into the fellows program or pre-k program that will pay for your masters...unfortunately I always knew I wanted to be a teacher so my parents and I paid for my degrees rather than the city :/

Good luck!

I know in the boros there is a need for pre-k teachers as it is now free full day pre-k for all NYC. Schools are scrambling to find teachers.

Don't do it. Teaching is not what it used to be.
