Has anyone or anyone you know delivered at Southside recently?
My experience at Southside was okay.. Not great, but no real complaints. I delivered my 2nd at Stonybrook and I will also deliver my 3rd there. I will actually be driving an hour (and passing Southside) to get there , it was that much better. After experiencing the facilities at Stonybrook I'd never go back to Southside. Everyone has their own beautiful private labor & delivery room, then your own private room on the maternity floor with private bathrooms. The baby never left my side, all testing and and the 1st bath were all done right next to me. It was amazing.

Which hospital are you thinking of switching from? Southside was ok, when my cousin delivered there. She wasn't happy at first. She had a shared room and that was terrible, but they were able to pay for a private room and then it was better. She said she had a much better experience with her 2nd at a different hospital.

I'm not really hospital shopping...I had a great experience delivering my other 2 at my previous hospital, but I am strongly considering a procedure at my delivery that that hospital would not allow my dr. to do and his only other hospital is Southside...

Re: Has anyone or anyone you know delivered at Southside recently?
I see what you're saying. I'm considering having my tubes tied after this baby. I know it isn't allowed at the hospital my OB delivers at (it's part of Catholic Health Services). I'll prob wait and have it done afterwards at an outpatient surgery center because I don't want to switch hospitals.
If you can afford the private room at Southside, I would def do that. The problem is that even if you're willing to pay, they might not have any available because they are first come, first served. After hearing about what my cousin dealt with, there's no way I would do a shared (or what they call "semi-private") room. Her husband is the cheapest guy you've ever met, and even he was more than willing to pay for the private room. When they talk about it, other parents agree or have their own terrible story about the shared rooms there. I'm sure a lot of people have a good experience, I just don't think I'd risk it after hearing the bad.

I only had shared rooms at my other hospital and I really would rather not have to go for a second surgery only due to a few days of my life. This is the first I am hearing of it being so bad but we were definitely going to go with private room..

This was 7 years ago, but I had a private room and my experience at Southside was fine. I have nothing but good things to say. If it's between that and having to go for a 2nd surgery, definitely deliver there.

I delivered at Southside 6 years ago and although I didn't pay for a private room, I never got a roommate. Loved my experience there from beginning to end.

I didn't have the best experience at Southside, but it's not like my health or safety was jeopardized at any time. I didn't receive the best care, and little mistakes were made, but if I was in your situation, I'd much rather be inconvenienced or uncomfortable for a few days, rather than go in for a separate surgery and hospital stay. Southside is not a terrible hospital, and you could have a bad experience even at the best hospital, or one you've liked before.

Thank you ladies. I feel the same way as many of you. I'd rather get this done now, have my dr, and mistakes can happen anywhere. I've spoken to a couple of people and most say they had a fine experience.

I think if I had a private room, it would have been a little better... however I wasn't totally thrilled with my nurses on the maternity floor. a first time mother recovering from a c-section did not need to be mocked for crying when they took blood from her 26 hour old baby ... but that is exactly what happened. I switched drs for this pregnancy to deliver at SBU.

I'm so sorry to hear of this..I hope you complained like it was your full time job as hospitals take that seriously. At this point, I love my doctor and am not switching to make a longer commute, etc. You can bet since this is my third, they are not getting away with anything ;)

Re: Has anyone or anyone you know delivered at Southside recently?
I will more than likely deliver naturally, so for me it's not another surgery. After looking at it from your perspective, if it means having a second surgery, I would also just pick Southside.
The more I think about it, I'm kind of annoyed that they don't perform certain procedures at the hospital I'll deliver at. Especially because it's really the only hospital close to me. If I had more options it wouldn't bother me really.
