Has anyone rolled over their 401k from an old job?

I am looking to roll over a 401K from an old job into a new IRA.

I'm unemployed so I cannot roll it into a new 401k (and it probably would not be my choice anyway.)

Any advice? How did you pick a brokerage firm? I have to contact my old company, right?

TIA!

I did it, I went to my bank and I saw their financial advisor who rolled it over for me.

I rolled mine over to an IRA. As someone said above...go to your bank and ask for advice.

Im in the process of doing this now. Our 401K was manged by JP Morgan. I contacted them and they said I can roll it over into an IRA managed by JP Morgan and I get access to top rated funds w/o any fees or commissions.

I would contact the company that managed your fund to see what options are available to you.

I did. I used Mutual Inc and everything is done through Oppenheimer.

I have rolled 401K to other 401K (after switching jobs).

The last time, I switched my 401K it was to an IRA. Mine is with ETrade.

Fortunatelly DH is really savy when it comes to investment so I can actually buy stocks with my 401K and sell them for profits. We both manager our own portfolios.

Re: Has anyone rolled over their 401k from an old job?

I need to do this. My old job offered a 403B (same idea but for non profit companies) through one company, and now my new one offers it through another. I haven't started a 403B at my new job, not sure if I should and if I could roll my old one over into it, or if I have to roll it into an IRA. Any ideas? Old one is Vanguard, new one is TIAA-CREF.

Thanks all!

Can anyone explain how they chose where they would put their money? I want to compare the options - as in variety of investments available, costs, etc. Does anyone know where I can easily find that info?

I rolled over a 401K (firm de-merged and closed out our existing 401K) into an IRA Rollover account. I use Scottrade. They rolled it directly into the new account so there would be no tax effect (i.e. taking distribution and not putting into rollover IRA within required time frame).

Once the IRA Rollover was opened, I was able to choose myself where I put the money. You may want to check with the institution on where you are putting the money on their advisory services.

FM if you have any more questions!

I did into an IRA. It was pretty straightforward. The IRA is with USAA.

Re: Has anyone rolled over their 401k from an old job?

I'm going to be in this situation....

But they said we could roll it over to an IRA or 401k if we get a new job, OR we could keep it in the 401k.

Anyone know if you keep it in the 401k... what interest does it earn? I'm contemplating leaving it, just because the interest might be better....

IDK if leaving it in the 401k might be a better option for you?? Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

You should know what interest rate your 401K is getting. Do you get monthly/quarterly statements?

Depending on your current 401K will determine if you can leave it in there after you terminate. Same with a new job 401K. I believe the plan documents would state whether or not you can leave it in the old 401K and whether or not your new employer's 401K will accept a rollover into their plan.
